Microstructure, mechanical, and biomimetic properties of fish scales from Pagrus major
Journal of Structural Biology, 2003The fish scale of Pagrus major has an orthogonal plywood structure of stratified lamellae, 1-2 microm in thickness, consisting of closely packed 70- to 80-nm-diameter collagen fibers. X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and infrared spectroscopy indicate that the mineral phase in the scale is calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite containing

Differences between Pagrus major and Pagrus auratus through mainly mtDNA control region analysis
Fisheries Science, 2000SUMMARY: The magnitude of intraspecific and interspecific genetic differentiation in Pagrus major collected from two Japanese areas, the East China Sea (ECS) and the South China Sea (SCS), and Pagrus auratus, collected from Australia (AUS) and New Zealand (NZ), was estimated using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis and DNA ...

Iridovirus Infection of Cultured Red Sea Bream, Pagrus major.

Juvenile bisexuality in the red sea bream,Pagrus major
Environmental Biology of Fishes, 1988The histology of the gonad of the red sea bream,Pagrus major, was examined in order to study the early gonadal development, sexual maturation and sex ratio in a natural population. A total of 1,117 fish between the ages of 4 months and 8 years were examined.

Ultrastructure of Pagrus major and Rhabdosargus sarba spermatozoa (Perciformes: Sparidae: Sparinae)
Tissue and Cell, 2004Transmission and scanning electron microscopy were used to investigate the ultrastructure of spermatozoa in two Sparinae species Pagrus major and Rhabdosargus sarba. Ultrastructurally, the spermatozoa of P. major and R. sarba both consist of a spherical, homogeneously electron-dense nucleus with a deep axial nuclear fossa, and an unusual notch, in the ...

Feeding Ecology of Red Seabream, Pagrus major (Sparidae) in the Korea Strait
Journal of Ichthyology, 2023The feeding ecology of red seabream, Pagrus major was studied using 1046 specimens collected by danish seine and bottom trawl from January to December 2018 in the Korea Strait. The size of the individuals ranged from 18.4 to 70.4 cm in fork length. Red seabream was a carnivore that consumed mainly anthozoans, brachyurans, and cephalopods.

Novel expression of importin α homologue in marine teleost, Pagrus major
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 2008Importin alpha proteins are critical modulators of the classical nuclear protein import pathway. Although the physiological roles of importin alpha have been extensively studied in invertebrates and mammals, very little is known about their counterparts in lower vertebrates.

Flow cytometry and ultrastructure of cryopreserved red seabream (Pagrus major) sperm
Theriogenology, 2007The objectives were to assess motility, fertilizing capacity, structural integrity, and mitochondrial function in fresh versus frozen-thawed (15% DMSO was used as a cryoprotectant) sperm from red seabream (Pagrus major). Mean (+/-S.D.) rates of motility, fertilization and hatching of frozen-thawed sperm were 81.0+/-5.4, 92.8+/-1.9, and 91.8+/-5.2 ...

Metagenomic profile of caudal fin morphology of farmed red sea bream Pagrus major
Diseases of Aquatic Organisms, 2023The morphology of farm-reared fish often differs from that of their wild counterparts, impacting their market value. Two caudal fin tip shapes, acutely angled and blunted, are recognized in farmed populations of red sea bream Pagrus major. The angled form is preferred by consumers over the blunt since it resembles that of wild fish.
