Chloride Selective, Nonprotonophoric Ion Transport with Macrocyclic Halogen Bonding Anionophores

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
Macrocyclic halogen bonding anionophores are reported, which enable very high chloride over proton and hydroxide transport selectivity. This ion selectivity profile is key for future potential therapeutic applications, and its origin is explored through DFT and MD simulations at the membrane.

Regulation of lipid droplet size in mammary epithelial cells by remodeling of membrane lipid composition-a potential mechanism.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Milk fat globule size is determined by the size of its precursors-intracellular lipid droplets-and is tightly associated with its composition. We examined the relationship between phospholipid composition of mammary epithelial cells and the size of both ...

Optimization and predictive modelling of biodiesel production from waste cooking oil catalyzed by blast furnace slag geopolymer using RSM and machine learning

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
Abstract Biodiesel production from waste cooking oil (WCO) has emerged owing to growing interest in sustainable energy sources. Geopolymers synthesized from industrial wastes, such as blast furnace slag (BFS), are promising catalysts because of their environmental benefits and catalytic properties.

Revisiting acidulation for tall oil and lignin manufacturing

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
Abstract Tall oil is a byproduct of the kraft pulping process when softwood is used as raw material. As the production of softwood‐based pulp is in high demand, the optimization of the tall oil production process needs to be revisited to ensure the highest quality and quantity of tall oil manufacturing. In this work, the process for tall oil production

Natural wax supported by microporous biochar to create a stable phase change material

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
Beeswax and hardwood charcoal are combined to form a stable and biodegradable composite phase change material. Abstract Energy storage, exploiting the latent heat of phase change materials, offers an efficient method to store and release heat. Initial developments of phase change materials and their containment targeted performance over environmental ...

Opium trade and use during the Late Bronze Age: Organic residue analysis of ceramic vessels from the burials of Tel Yehud, Israel

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView., 2022
Abstract Organic residue analysis was conducted on various vessels from burials at Tel Yehud, Israel. The analyses led to new reliable evidence for the presence of opioid alkaloids and their decomposition products. This research revitalizes a decades‐old discussion on the presence and function of the opium trade across a cultural region of utmost ...

Long-term effects of cis and trans monounsaturated (18:1) and saturated (16:0) fatty acids on the synthesis and secretion of apolipoprotein A-I- and apolipoprotein B-containing lipoproteins in HepG2 cells

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2000
The objective of this study was to compare the long-term effects of oleic (cis 18:1), elaidic (trans 18:1), and palmitic (16:0) acids on hepatic lipoprotein production, using HepG2 cells as an experimental model.

Analytical Study of Lanolin as Potential Biomarker of Prehistoric Sheep‐Shearing Practice

open access: yesChemistry–Methods, EarlyView.
Lanolin, a complex wax found on sheep wool, accumulates on shearing tools, such as flint and obsidian blades, used since the Neolithic. This study explores lanolin's degradation patterns as a potential biomarker for prehistoric sheep‐shearing practices, employing micro‐Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging, and gas ...
