Tackling cancer stemness with nanotechnology in the era of precision medicine

open access: yesBMEMat, EarlyView.
Precise customization of nanoparticles (NPs) enables active targeting of cancer stem cells (CSCs), thereby improving drug delivery and therapeutic efficacy. NP‐based probing enhances CSC detection through imaging and liquid biopsy, whereas diverse therapeutic payloads improve therapeutic outcomes.

Specific modulation of airway epithelial tight junctions by apical application of an occludin peptide [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Tight junctions are directly involved in regulating the passage of ions and macromolecules (gate functions) in epithelial and endothelial cells. The modulation of these gate functions to transiently regulate the paracellular permeability of large solutes

High paracellular nutrient absorption in intact bats is associated with high paracellular permeability in perfused intestinal segments [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Biology, 2014
Abstract Water-soluble nutrients are absorbed by the small intestine via transcellular and paracellular mechanisms. Based on a few previous studies, the capacity for paracellular nutrient absorption seems greater in flying mammals than in nonflying mammals, but there has been little investigation of the mechanisms driving this difference ...

The ageing holobiont: crosstalk between telomere dynamics, oxidative stress and the gut microbiome

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The gut tissue is at the frontline of early onset of ageing. It exhibits high cell turnover rates and rapid telomere shortening, which can have systemic effects on the developing or senescing organism. We conducted a literature review of studies on the crosstalk between telomere length dynamics, telomerase activity, oxidative stress, and gut ...

The arteriolar vasodilatation model of vibrio cholerae induced diarrhoeal disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Secretory diarrhoeal disease caused by enterotoxins produced by pathogenic bacteria is characterised by severe fluid loss into the intestine. A prevalent explanation for such high rates of loss, such as occur in episodes of cholera, is that intestinal ...

Paracellular permeability of corneal and conjunctival epithelia.

open access: yesInvestigative ophthalmology & visual science, 1989
The paracellular permeability of normal rabbit cornea and conjunctiva was studied in vivo and in vitro. After intravenous administration, horseradish peroxidase was found to percolate to the intercellular space of conjunctival epithelia and was restricted by the tight junctions of the superficial epithelium.

Environmental Transformation and Trophic Transfer of Engineered Nanomaterials in the Agri‐Food Chain and Implications for human Health

open access: yesChemFoodChem, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) are increasingly applied in agriculture to improve crop yield, nutrient efficiency, and food quality. This study examines the environmental transformation of ENMs, their uptake in plants, and their transfer across the agri‐food chain leading to human exposure.

Gut‐microbiota‐brain Axis and post‐traumatic epilepsy

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract There has been growing evidence that perturbations in gut‐microbiota‐brain axis (GMBA) are involved in mechanisms of chronic sequelae of traumatic brain injury (TBI). This review discusses the connection between GMBA and post‐traumatic epilepsy (PTE), the latter being a common outcome of TBI.

Influence of Nanomaterials and Nanocomposites on the Nutrient Composition

open access: yesFood Safety and Health, EarlyView.
Nanomaterials and nanocomposites enhance crop nutrition and food quality by improving nutrient availability, plant uptake, and bioavailability through controlled delivery and nano‐encapsulation. Their applications in agriculture and food systems enable sustainable biofortification, improved preservation, and functional foods, while emphasizing safety ...

A dual-tracer method for differentiating transendothelial transport from paracellular leakage in vivo and in vitro

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2012
Inflammation-induced impaired function of vascular endothelium may cause leakage of plasma proteins that can lead to edema. Proteins may leave the vascular lumen through two main paracellular and transcellular pathways.
