Semi-Automatic Parallel Corpora Extraction from Comparable News Corpora
Polibits, 2010The parallel corpus is a necessary resource in many multi/cross lingual natural language processing applications that include Machine Translation and Cross Lingual Information Retreival. Preparation of large scale parallel corpus takes time and also demands the linguistics skill.

Are papers presented in corpus-based translation studies truly scientific? These are normally done on only one language pair, often on purpose-made parallel corpora, and can normally not be replicated. Therefore their value is limited in a strictly scientific sense.

Although parallel corpora are vital for cross-linguistic and natural language processing (NLP) research, most have been designed for just one particular purpose, which may unnecessarily restrict their usefulness and usability. My argument is that the usefulness of existing parallel corpora increases exponentially when data so obtained are combined with

Dual Subtitles as Parallel Corpora
2014In this paper, we leverage the existence of dual subtitles as a source of parallel data. Dual subtitles present viewers with two languages simultaneously, and are generally aligned in the segment level, which removes the need to automatically perform this alignment.

Parallel corpora can be used in translation research in at least two ways: as the main source of data or as a supplement to data retrieved from a comparable corpus, enabling data triangulation. In the former scenario, they may throw light on contrastive aspects or on translator techniques and methods.

Equivalence and Non-equivalence in Parallel Corpora
International Journal of Corpus Linguistics, 2001The present paper shows how an aligned parallel corpus can be used to investigate the consistency of translation equivalence across the two languages in a parallel corpus. The particular issues addressed are the bidirectionality of translation equivalence, the coverage of multiword units, and the amount of implicit knowledge presupposed on the part of ...

Parallel phrase extraction from English-Vietnamese parallel corpora
The 2013 RIVF International Conference on Computing & Communication Technologies - Research, Innovation, and Vision for Future (RIVF), 2013Parallel phrases are important for some Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks such as machine translation or cross language information retrieval. This paper proposes a novel method to extract parallel phrases from English-Vietnamese parallel corpora.
