OXIDATIVE STRESS AND LIPID PEROXIDATION IN THE NEWBORN [PDF]

open access: yesPediatric Research, 1994
Increasing appreciation of the causative role of oxidative injury in the development of many severe diseases of the newborn places great importance on the reliable assessment of lipid peroxidation. Lipid peroxidation in the erythrocyte membrane has been widely investigated but little has been reported on lipid peroxidation in the plasma The aim of the ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Supplementation with Bioactive Compounds Improves Health and Rejuvenates Biological Age in Postmenopausal Women

open access: yesBiomolecules
Aging involves immune system deterioration (immunosenescence) and increased oxidative stress, both associated with morbidity and mortality. Menopause accelerates aging, highlighting the need for strategies to mitigate its effects in postmenopausal women.

Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 increases metastatic potential and aggressiveness in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

The Improvement of Sepsis-Associated Encephalopathy by P2X7R Inhibitor through Inhibiting the Omi/HtrA2 Apoptotic Signaling Pathway

open access: yesBehavioural Neurology, 2022
The pathogenesis of sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) involves many aspects, including intracellular peroxidative stress damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cell apoptosis. In this study, we mainly explored the influence of P2X7R on the cognitive

Coordination of the N-Terminal Heme in the Non-Classical Peroxidase from Escherichia coli

open access: yesMolecules, 2023
The non-classical bacterial peroxidase from Escherichia coli, YhjA, is proposed to deal with peroxidative stress in the periplasm when the bacterium is exposed to anoxic environments, defending it from hydrogen peroxide and allowing it to thrive under ...

Extra virgin olive oil and cardiovascular diseases: benefits for human health [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The cardioprotective properties of Mediterranean Diet were demonstrated for the first time from the Seven Country Study. In the last few decades, numerous epidemiological studies, as well as intervention trial, confirmed this observation, pointing out ...

Dimethyl fumarate combined with cisplatin at subcytotoxic doses sensitizes cervical cancer toward ferroptosis and apoptosis through GSH restriction and p53 (re)activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.

The Oxidative Stress of Human Sperm Cryopreservation

open access: yesAntioxidants
Due to their negligible cytoplasm and composition of the sperm plasmalemma, spermatozoa are particularly vulnerable to lipid peroxidative damage induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS).
