Archaeal Persisters: Persister Cell Formation as a Stress Response in Haloferax volcanii

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2017
Persister cells are phenotypic variants within a microbial population, which are dormant and transiently tolerant to stress. Persistence has been studied extensively in bacteria, and in eukaryotes to a limited extent, however, it has never been observed ...

The Impact of Tenapanor on Body Composition and Blood Pressure in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients: A Pilot Study

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Instruction Tenapanor potentially affects fluid volume and blood pressure. This study explored its effects on these parameters in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). Methods We conducted a single‐arm, prospective observational study that enrolled 10 patients on PD with hyperphosphatemia who were newly initiated on tenapanor.

Differential carbon source utilization drives metabolic state and resuscitation in antibiotic-tolerant persister cells

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology
IntroductionPersistent infections remain challenging due to dormant bacterial cells that tolerate conventional antibiotics. Specifically, persister cells, phenotypic variants characterized by high antibiotic tolerance, can resume growth once antibiotic ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Ribosome State Distributions Define Escherichia coli Persister Physiology: Links to Formation, Stress Responses, and Resuscitation Dynamics

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology
Persister cells survive antibiotic exposure and contribute to infection relapse, yet the molecular features that distinguish them from actively growing cells remain incompletely defined.

Coarse grained mathematical description of bacterial persister related concepts from Integrative biology of persister cell formation: molecular circuitry, phenotypic diversification and fitness effects

open access: yes, 2022
The following mathematical descriptions accompany concepts discussed in the main text of our review article "Integrative biology of persister-cell formation: molecular circuitry, phenotypic diversification and fitness effects".

Persistent Current and Persistent Charge in Nanostructures [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
Quantúm effects in the interaction of electromagnetic field with small, but not microscopically small, metallic particles and rings are investigated. The aspects of mesoscopic systems related to time-independent (or magnetic) Aharonov-Bohm effect, time-dependent (electric) Aharonov-Bohm effect, and to quantum high-frequency effects in a coupled system:

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Antimicrobial Peptides

open access: yesPharmaceuticals, 2013
The rapid increase in drug-resistant infections has presented a serious challenge to antimicrobial therapies. The failure of the most potent antibiotics to kill “superbugs” emphasizes the urgent need to develop other control agents.
