Pathways of Protein Secretion in Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes: Molecular Mechanisms, Biological Functions, and Therapeutic Opportunities

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 6, June 2026.
This graphical abstract delineates noncanonical protein secretion systems across eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Eukaryotic UcPS covers four ER–Golgi bypass pathways, enabling rapid leaderless protein export via direct transmembrane translocation or vesicle‐mediated release.

KEGG Syntax for comparison of organisms, organism groups, and viruses by conserved gene repertoires

open access: yesProtein Science, Volume 35, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract The KEGG Orthology (KO) system has been used as a basic framework of the KEGG database for linking genes in the genome to pathways and other molecular networks. KOs are manually defined orthologs representing conserved genes with relevance to molecular and higher‐level functions.

Gene‐specific double‐stranded RNAs induce mortality in the South African mealybug Delottococcus aberiae

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 82, Issue 6, Page 5184-5194, June 2026.
Gene‐specific double‐stranded RNAs effectively silence essential genes in the invasive citrus pest Delottococcus aberiae, leading to significant mortality through both microinjection and oral delivery. These results provide proof of concept for RNA interference‐based biopesticides as selective and sustainable tools for citrus integrated pest management.

The Flavonoids Daidzein and Genistein Induce Wall‐Deficient Cell Formation in Streptomyces coelicolor Under Hyperosmotic Stress

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 6, June 2026.
Plant‐derived isoflavones (daidzein and genistein) function as chemical signals that induce stress‐dependent formation of wall‐deficient cells (S‐cells) in Streptomyces coelicolor. ABSTRACT Streptomycetes exhibit a complex multicellular life cycle, including programmed cell death and hyphal differentiation, and can generate extracellular vesicles and ...

Kineochelins—A New Group of Siderophores From an Antarctic Bacterium

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 6, June 2026.
Genome‐guided analysis of an Antarctic Actinokineospora strain led to the discovery of kineochelins, a new group of siderophores involved in iron sequestration and microbial competition. Kineochelin production inhibits co‐occurring bacteria and clinically relevant yeasts, highlighting Antarctic microorganisms as promising sources of bioactive natural ...
