Control of two sucking insect pests, a whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) and a thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis), infesting hot peppers by spraying LDH‐formulated dsRNA

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
A vacuolar type ATPase subunit B (vATPase‐B) gene is identified and expressed in the midgut of Bemisia tabaci and Frankliniella occidentalis. The double‐stranded RNA (dsRNA) specific to vATPase‐B was expressed in hot peppers by virus‐induced gene silencing (VIGS) and killed both whitefly and thrips.

Effects of virus infection on release of volatile organic compounds from insect-damaged bean, Phaseolus vulgaris [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Insects can serve as important vectors of plant pathogens, especially viruses. Insect feeding on plants causes the systemic release of a wide range of plant volatile compounds that can serve as an indirect plant defense by attracting natural enemies of ...

AXR1 acts after lateral bud formation to inhibit lateral bud growth in Arabidopsis [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
The AXR1 gene of Arabidopsis is required for many auxin responses. The highly branched shoot phenotype of mature axr1 mutant plants has been taken as genetic evidence for a role of auxin in the control of shoot branching.

Regional variability in Phaseolus vulgaris L. (II.) Seed character frequencies in Transylvania

open access: yesNotulae Botanicae Horti Agrobotanici Cluj-Napoca, 1985
Attempt was made to evaluate gene frequencies using seed characters registred in Phaseolus vulgaris, cultivated in traditional multicropping (Zea + Phaseolus + Cucurbita) in a sample territory in Transylvania (Romania). The highest frequencies were found

Optimized use of UV‐B light to suppress Western flower thrips in controlled environment tomato crops

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Visual representation of study into the use of UV‐B light to simultaneously attract and suppress Western flower thrips in controlled environment crops. Abstract BACKGROUND LEDs (light emitting diodes) are being deployed in controlled environment crop production systems to boost crop growth, manipulate pest behavior, improve performance of natural ...

Microinjection‐enabled gene silencing in first instar larvae of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, reveals vital genes for larval survival

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
This study introduces a microinjection technique to deliver dsRNA into the hemolymph of first instar larval thrips (L1s) via the foreleg coxa, enhancing survival rates by minimizing internal tissue damage. Significant knockdown of V‐ATPase‐B, CYP3653A2, and ApoLp‐II/I was achieved, with silencing of CYP3653A2 or ApoLp‐II/I increasing larval mortality ...

Arguments for and against self and non-self root recognition in plants [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Root–root interaction research gained more and more attention over the past few years. Roots are pivotal for plant survival because they ensure uptake of water and nutrients.
