Physiology
Neuromotor control of diaphragm muscle (DIAm) involves size-dependent recruitment of phrenic motor neurons (PhMNs). To accomplish breathing, only slow (type S) and fast, fatigue resistant (type FR) DIAm motor units are recruited. Thus, type s and FR DIAm motor units are very active in sustaining ventilation throughout life.

Physiology
Intrapleural injection of cholera toxin B fragment conjugated to saporin (CTB-SAP) selectively kills phrenic motor neurons in the cervical spinal cord, and mimics aspects of neurodegenerative diseases including breathing deficits. In addition, phrenic plasticity is enhanced following 7 days (d) of CTB-SAP vs. control rats, whereas plasticity in 28d CTB-
