Comparing Levels of Fitness of Police Officers between Two United States Law Enforcement Agencies Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
BACKGROUND: The general physical task demands of law enforcement may suggest that police Officers are of similar fitness levels across cities, states and countries.OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether fitness levels of police Officers from two different ...

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Aerobic fitness impacts sympathoadrenal axis responses to concurrent challenges [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The combination of mental and physical challenges can elicit exacerbated cardiorespiratory (CR) and catecholamine responses above that of a single challenge alone.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Changes in Accelerometer-measured Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior From Before to After COVID-19 Outbreak in Workers

open access: yesJournal of Epidemiology
Background: The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may have reduced opportunities for engaging in physical activity (PA) and increased sedentary behavior (SB) among workers.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Network divergence analysis identifies adaptive gene modules and two orthogonal vulnerability axes in pancreatic cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumors contain diverse cellular states whose behavior is shaped by context‐dependent gene coordination. By comparing gene–gene relationships across biological contexts, we identify adaptive transcriptional modules that reorganize into distinct vulnerability axes.

Effects of priming exercise on oxygen uptake kinetics, muscle oxygenation, and metabolic load in trained anaerobic athletes: a randomized crossover trial [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ
Background This study aimed to compare the acute and residual physiological responses elicited by three different priming exercise strategies, including high-intensity priming exercise (HIPE), low-intensity priming exercise (LIPE), and low-intensity ...

Plasma BDNF and TrkB mRNA in PBMCs Are Correlated With Anti-depressive Effects of 12-Weeks Supervised Exercise During Protracted Methamphetamine Abstinence

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, 2020
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential neurotrophic factors and expression of neurotrophin receptors in peripheral blood mononuclear cells linked with the antidepressant action of exercise intervention during protracted ...

Sex-Mediated Differences Among University Students Performing Extreme Physical Activity During The 3-Minute Burpee Test [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Introduction. The aim of this study was to evaluate sex differences in anthropometric indicators, body composition, physical fitness, and physiological parameters in young women and men performing extremely strenuous exercise during the 3-Minute Burpee ...
