Health risk assessment of heavy metals in three invertebrate species collected along Alexandria Coast, Egypt

open access: yesEgyptian Journal of Aquatic Research, 2020
The distribution of eight heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cr, Ni, Pb and Cd) in three species namely Pinctada radiata, Brachidontes pharaonis and Holothuria polii was determined seasonally from seven stations along Alexandria Coast, Mediterranean Sea ...

Embryonic Hormetic Priming Modulates Later‐Life Thermal Tolerance [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
This study investigates how early‐life thermal environments affect later thermal tolerance in the black‐lip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera. Developmental thermal priming had contrasting, family‐specific effects on thermal tolerance, with conserved stress‐response pathways but evidence of priming‐induced regulatory network reorganization.

Sustainability and traceability in marine cultured pearl production [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
For centuries, wild pearl oysters and mussels were fished in the quest for natural pearls and shell material. This eventually led to the drastic overexploitation of oyster stocks in many areas of the globe.

A homeodomain transcription factor gene, PfMSX, activates expression of Pif gene in the pearl oyster Pinctada fucata. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
We reported pearl oyster Pinctada fucata cDNA and genomic characterization of a new homeobox-containing protein, PfMSX. The PfMSX gene encodes a transcription factor that was localized to the nucleus.

Histopathology of oedema in pearl oysters Pinctada maxima [PDF]

open access: yesDiseases of Aquatic Organisms, 2010
In October 2006, severe mortalities (80 to 100%) were reported in pearl oyster Pinctada maxima production farms from Exmouth Gulf, Western Australia. Only P. maxima were affected; other bivalves including black pearl oysters P. margaratifera remained healthy. Initial investigations indicated that the mortality was due to an infectious process, although

Mitogenomic Analysis of Pterioidea (Bivalvia: Pteriomorphia): Insights into the Evolution of the Gene Rearrangements

open access: yesFishes, 2023
The complete mitogenomes of Pinctada albina and Pinctada margaritifera were sequenced in this study, with sizes of 23,841 bp and 15,556 bp, respectively.

Structural, mineralogical, and biochemical diversity in the lower part of the pearl layer of cultivated seawater pearls from Polynesia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
A series of Polynesian pearls has been investigated with particular attention to the structural and compositional patterns of the early developmental stages of the pearl layer.

Exploring HSP90 as a Biomarker for Marine Heatwaves in Pinctada maxima

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
Many species, particularly marine organisms, are becoming more vulnerable to marine heatwaves due to climate change. Marine species anticipate perishing during marine heatwaves, but there is a growing interest in learning why some can resist.

Anisotropy of Mechanical Properties of Pinctada margaritifera Mollusk Shell [PDF]

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2020
The mechanical properties such as compressive strength and nanohardness were investigated for Pinctada margaritifera mollusk shells. The compressive strength was evaluated through a uniaxial static compression test performed along the load directions parallel and perpendicular to the shell axis, respectively, while the hardness and Young modulus were ...
