Shell nacre is laid upon an organic cell-free matrix, part of which, paradoxically, is water soluble and displays biological activities. Proteins in the native shell also constitute an insoluble network and offer a model for studying supramolecular organization as a means of self-ordering.

Journal of Invertebrate Pathology, 1972Abstract Two mesenchymal polyps arising from the visceral mass in the gut loop area of Pinctada margaritifera had normal low columnar ciliated and pigmented epithelium and associated secretory cells. The stroma of both tumors was richly vascularized with well differentiated tissue of scattered muscle fibers in a collagenous matrix.
