Evaluation of bleeding risk and measurement methods in dental patients [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Objective: The present study explores bleeding manifestations in routine dental surgical procedures, evaluates the influence of antithrombotic drugs upon bleeding risk, and validates the efficiency of a clinical method for the measurement of bleeding.

Bulk fluid phase behaviour of colloidal platelet-sphere and platelet-polymer mixtures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Using a geometry-based fundamental measure density functional theory, we calculate bulk fluid phase diagrams of colloidal mixtures of vanishingly thin hard circular platelets and hard spheres. We find isotropic-nematic phase separation with strong broadening of the biphasic region upon increasing the pressure.

Identification of novel small molecule inhibitors of ETS transcription factors

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
ETS transcription factors play an essential role in tumourigenesis and are indispensable for sprouting angiogenesis, a hallmark of cancer, which fuels tumour expansion and dissemination. Thus, targeting ETS transcription factor function could represent an effective, multifaceted strategy to block tumour growth. The evolutionarily conserved E‐Twenty‐Six

Anomalous Platelet Transport & Fat-Tailed Distributions [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
The transport of platelets in blood is commonly assumed to obey an advection-diffusion equation. Here we propose a disruptive view, by showing that the random part of their velocity is governed by a fat-tailed probability distribution, usually referred to as a L\'evy flight.

Effects of tranexamic acid on platelet function and thrombin generation (ETAPlaT): WOMAN trial sub-study. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background. Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is a leading cause of maternal death. Tranexamic acid (TXA) has the potential to reduce bleeding and a large randomized placebo controlled trial of its effect in women with PPH (The WOMAN trial) is underway.

Subpar reporting of pre‐analytical variables in RNA‐focused blood plasma studies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pre‐analytical variables strongly influence the analysis of extracellular RNA (cell‐free RNA; exRNA) derived from blood plasma. Their reporting is essential to allow interpretation and replication of results. By evaluating 200 exRNA studies, we pinpoint a lack of reporting pre‐analytical variables associated with blood collection, plasma preparation ...

Vortex interactions in a thin platelet superconductor [PDF]

open access: yesJ Stat Mech (2008) 11004, 2008
The thermal fluctations of vortices in a superconductor can be usefully mapped onto the quantum fluctations of a collection of bosons at T=0 moving in 2 dimensions. When the superconductor is a thin platelet with the magnetic field parallel to its surface, the interacting quantum bosons are effectively moving in 1 dimension, allowing for powerful ...

Platelet function tests using platelet aggregometry: need for repetition of the test for diagnosis of defective platelet function

open access: yesPlatelets, 2003
Four hundred and ninety seven patients were referred to our center for platelet aggregation studies because of spontaneous mucocutaneous bleeds. All these patients had normal complete blood count, platelet count and peripheral smears except in ten patients of Bernard Soulier Syndrome where platelet count was marginally reduced in the presence of giant ...

Aspirin and clopidogrel resistance: methodological challenges and opportunities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Antiplatelet drug resistance is one of the urgent issues in current cardiovascular medicine. Many platelet function tests have been used to define responsiveness of patients with cardiovascular disease to aspirin and clopidogrel. In most studies, cut-off

Patients with liver cirrhosis suffer from primary haemostatic defects? Fact or fiction? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Patients with cirrhosis can have abnormalities in laboratory tests reflecting changes in primary haemostasis, including bleeding time, platelet function tests, markers of platelet activation, and platelet count.
