The ecclesiastical fight against storm‐makers in the Latin west

This paper studies the strategies used by the Church to fight against the storm‐makers. These figures were said to cause the storms that ruined crops, and during Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages in the Visigothic and Frankish kingdoms were subject to punishment and constraints.

Winter‐active spiders (Clubiona) have a hyperactive antifreeze protein with a unique beta‐solenoid fold

Antifreeze proteins from winter‐active spiders were purified using their affinity for ice. After LC–MSMS characterization, corresponding transcripts were identified. The antifreeze protein folds as a β‐solenoid with a large flat ice‐binding site on one surface and can bind to ice crystals and prevent their growth at −4 °C.

A new branch of mammalian vitamin B6 metabolism: AKR1C‐mediated conversion of pyridoxal to pyridoxine and 4‐pyridoxolactone

Pyridoxal 5′‐phosphate (PLP) homeostasis relies on salvage enzymes, yet key metabolic branches remain undefined. We identify AKR1C isozymes as previously undescribed contributors that convert pyridoxal into pyridoxine or 4‐pyridoxolactone through reductase and dehydrogenase activities.

Abstract Somatic growth influences survival and reproduction, with flow‐on effects on population dynamics and energy fluxes within ecosystems. Small‐bodied cryptobenthic reef fishes may contribute significantly to productivity due to their life‐history traits, including growth rates and rapid generational turnover.
