A PLK1 kinase inhibitor enhances the chemosensitivity of cisplatin by inducing pyroptosis in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma

open access: yesEBioMedicine, 2019
Background Targeting PLK1 has recently been proven as a viable therapeutic strategy against oesophageal squamous cell carcinom (ESCC). Therefore, this study aimed to explore whether the PLK1 inhibitor BI2536 is able to sensitize ESCC cells to cisplatin ...

Non‐canonical cMet regulation by vimentin mediates Plk1 inhibitor–induced apoptosis

open access: yesEMBO Molecular Medicine, 2019
To address the need for improved systemic therapy for non–small‐cell lung cancer (NSCLC), we previously demonstrated that mesenchymal NSCLC was sensitive to polo‐like kinase (Plk1) inhibitors, but the mechanisms of resistance in epithelial NSCLC remain ...

Evidence That the Protein Phosphatase Activity of PTEN Contributes to Embryonic Development and Tumor Suppression

open access: yesCancer Science, EarlyView.
Mice expressing only mutant PTEN Y138L, a protein which shows normal suppression of cellular AKT yet lacks protein phosphatase activity, die in utero, and heterozygous mice display a range of tumors. This indicates both the lipid and protein phosphatase activities of PTEN work together for normal tumor suppression and embryonic development.

Re-investigating PLK1 inhibitors as antimitotic agents

open access: yes, 2017
Polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) plays key roles during mitosis, prompting the development of PLK1 inhibitors for anticancer therapy. We recently determined that PLK1 is crucially required for entry into mitosis.

Clinical relevance of PLK1 in epithelial ovarian cancer

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology
Ovarian cancer, particularly epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), is the most aggressive and lethal gynecologic malignancy, necessitating the development of innovative and potent therapies to improve its prognosis.

Proteostasis in the regulation of pancreatic islet cell plasticity

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes Investigation, EarlyView.
Adaptive proteostasis integrates protein synthesis, folding, trafficking, and degradation through ISR, UPR, ER stress responses, autophagy, and proteasomal degradation. In pancreatic islet cells, this coordinated network preserves protein quality, secretory function, proliferation, and survival, enabling adaptation to metabolic stress and aging while ...

Functional and structural impacts of oncogenic missense variants on human polo-like kinase 1 protein

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioinformatics
IntroductionThe polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1), a master key mitotic regulator, is frequently expressed in various types of cancers and associated with poor prognosis.

Identifying Co‐Expressed lncRNAs Correlated With Traits of Interest in an Animal Model for Metabolic Diseases in Humans

open access: yesAnimal Genetics, Volume 57, Issue 5, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Nutrigenomics investigates how nutrients modulate gene expression. Among them, fatty acids (FA) play important roles in regulating gene transcription, while long non‐coding RNAs (lncRNAs) may be associated with gene regulation and metabolic diseases.

Activation of the endomitotic spindle assembly checkpoint and thrombocytopenia in Plk1-deficient mice. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Polyploidization in megakaryocytes is achieved by endomitosis, a specialized cell cycle in which DNA replication is followed by aberrant mitosis. Typical mitotic regulators such as Aurora kinases or Cdk1 are dispensable for megakaryocyte maturation, and ...

Immunoinformatic-guided design of a polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1)-targeted multi-epitope vaccine with preliminary in vitro validation

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioinformatics
IntroductionPolo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) is a well-established oncogenic protein, as indicated by elevated levels of protein expression and function in a variety of tumor malignancies, and thus helps in metastasis of the disease.
