A Fruitful Journey: Pollen Tube Navigation from Germination to Fertilization

Annual Review of Plant Biology, 2019
In flowering plants, pollen tubes undergo tip growth to deliver two nonmotile sperm to the ovule where they fuse with an egg and central cell to achieve double fertilization.

Staining Germinating Pollen and Pollen Tubes

Stain Technology, 1958
Germinating pollen on stigmas and pollen tubes in styles of Antirrhinum, Brassica, Oenothera, Raphanus, Rosa, solatium and Tagetes spp. were prepared for examination as follows: The styles were fixed in ethyl alcohol-acetic acid 3:1 for 1 hr, and hydrolyzed at 60°C for 5 to 60 min (depending on the species) in 45% acetic acid.

AGC1.5 Kinase Phosphorylates RopGEFs to Control Pollen Tube Growth

open access: yesMolecular Plant, 2018
Double fertilization in angiosperms requires the targeted delivery of immotile sperm to the eggs through pollen tubes. The polarity of tip-growing pollen tubes is maintained through dynamic association of active Rho GTPases of plants (ROP-GTP) with the ...

Pollen Tube Development

2010
Pollen tubes grow rapidly in a strictly polarized manner as they transport male reproductive cells through female flower tissues to bring about fertilization. Vegetative pollen tube cells are an excellent model system to investigate processes underlying directional cell expansion.

Calcium: A Critical Factor in Pollen Germination and Tube Elongation

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2019
Pollen is the male gametophyte of higher plants. Its major function is to deliver sperm cells to the ovule to ensure successful fertilization. During this process, many interactions occur among pollen tubes and pistil cells and tissues, and calcium ion ...

The Pollen and Pollen Tube

1960
In 1694, Camerarius reported that anthers play the role of male sexual organs in plants (Maheshwari, 1950). Later, AMICI observed pollen tubes travelling through the stigma and style of Portulaca oleracea and in 1830 he concluded that pollen tubes elongate and ultimately come in contact with the ovule (Maheshwari, 1950). Since then the work of numerous

Pollen mitosis and pollen tube growth inhibition by SO2 in cultured pollen tubes of Tradescantia

Environmental Research, 1976
Abstract Mature pollen of Tradescantia paludosa Anders. Sax clone-3 was collected from greenhouse grown plants and desiccated in the dark for 4–5 hours. The pollen was sown on microslides coated with lactose agar medium (supplemented with 0.02% colchicine).
