Serum Fatty Acids and Risk of Cutaneous Melanoma: A Population-Based Case-Control Study

open access: yesDermatology Research and Practice, 2013
Background. Some observational studies have suggested that excess dietary intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids such as linoleic acid increases cutaneous melanoma risk.

Astrocytes are mainly responsible for the polyunsaturated fatty acid enrichment in blood–brain barrier endothelial cells in vitro

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1998
To determine the respective roles of endothelial cells from brain capillaries and astrocytes in the conversion of circulating 18:2n–6 and 18:3n–3 into 20:4n–6 and 22:6n–3, respectively, a coculture of the two cell types mimicking the in vivo blood–brain ...

Postoperative Stress Accelerates Atherosclerosis Through Inflammatory Remodeling of the HDL Proteome and Impaired Reverse Cholesterol Transport

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The study shows that noncardiac surgical inflammation rapidly disrupts HDL function and cholesterol efflux in mice and human patients. Impaired reverse cholesterol transport after surgery drives rapid lipid accumulation, NETosis, and apoptosis within atherosclerotic plaques.

Fatty acid intake in relation to reproductive hormones and testicular volume among young healthy men

open access: yesAsian Journal of Andrology, 2017
Emerging evidence suggests that dietary fats may influence testicular function. However, most of the published literature on this field has used semen quality parameters as the only proxy for testicular function. We examined the association of fat intake

Overweight and erythrocyte polyunsaturated fatty acid changes in menopause

open access: yesThe EuroBiotech Journal, 2020
Lipid disorders have been implicated in overweight and menopause. However, evidence on lipidomic analysis of fatty acids in erythrocytes of menopausal women is scarce.

Quantitative genetic manipulation for nauplii size reduction of Artemia franciscana Kellogg, 1906 from Indian salinas and correlated changes in the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) profile [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Thirteen generations of mass selection was carried out in a strain of Artemia franciscana collected from an Indian salina. The primary trait under selection was nauplii length, and the criteria of selection was small size.

Amyloid β Instigates Cardiac Neurotrophic Signaling Impairment, Driving Alzheimer's Associated Heart Disease

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This research identified cardiac amyloid pathology, neurotrophic factor depletion, and reduced myocardial nerve function in a transgenic model of cerebral amyloidosis (Tg2576), Aβ‐challenged cardiomyocytes, and in human AD heart tissue. These findings carry significant diagnostic and therapeutic implications, emphasizing the role of neuro‐signaling ...

Genomic prediction and genetic parameter estimation for unsaturated and saturated fatty acids in Canadian dairy cattle

open access: yesScientific Reports
The current study aimed to obtain the estimates of heritabilities and genetic correlations and the prediction abilities and accuracy of Bayesian GBLUP and Bayesian alphabet (BayesA, BayesB, BayesC) models for total and individual monounsaturated ...

Sex-specific effect of dietary fatty acids on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

open access: yesFrontiers in Nutrition
BackgroundNon-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the most common chronic hepatic disease worldwide. Dietary fatty acid is tightly associated with the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease but few large-scale and in-depth clinical researches have

Chemical composition and fatty acid contents in farmed freshwater prawns

open access: yesPesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira, 2013
The objective of this work was to evaluate the chemical composition and fatty acid contents of Amazonian and giant river prawns. After four-month farming, with the same diet for both species, palmitic and stearic acids were the main saturated fatty acids.
