Structural organization of filamentous proteins in postsynaptic density
Biochemistry, 1983Actin is one of the major protein constituents of the postsynaptic density (PSD), a characteristic structural entity subjacent to the postsynaptic membrane in excitatory synapses of the vertebrate central nervous system. In isolated purified PSD preparations, it is present to the extent of 29 +/- 2 micrograms/mg of total protein, 90% of which is in the

SAP97 concentrates at the postsynaptic density in cerebral cortex
European Journal of Neuroscience, 2000AbstractSAP97, a PDZ‐containing protein, is reported to concentrate in axon terminals, where its function remains unknown. Using highly specific new antibodies, we show that SAP97 in rat cerebral cortex is associated with heteromeric AMPA receptors via a selective biochemical interaction between SAP97 and the GluR1 subunit.

Effect of calpain on the composition and structure of postsynaptic densities
Synapse, 1995AbstractEndogenous calcium‐activated proteases, the calpains, are thought to play a role in the regulation of postsynaptic function. Here we characterize some biochemical and morphological effects of calpain on isolated postsynaptic densities (PSDs). When a PSD preparation from rat forebrain was treated with exogenous calpain, many proteins, including ...

Scaffold Proteins in the Postsynaptic Density
2008Many intractable neurological and mental diseases, including epilepsy, depression, and schizophrenia, are believed to result, in part, from derangements of regulation of synaptic transmission in the brain. For this reason, much effort has been made to discover how the delicate mechanisms of signal transduction at synapses lead to modification of ...

Postsynaptic Density/Architecture at Excitatory Synapses
2009At excitatory synapses of the central nervous system, the postsynaptic density (PSD), a specialized structure underneath the postsynaptic membrane, controls the reception and integration of synaptic signals. The PSD functions as an extended protein assembly connecting integral membrane proteins (e.g., glutamate-gated ion channels) with cytoskeletal ...

Proteomic Analysis of the Postsynaptic Density
2010The postsynaptic density (PSD) is a large protein complex lining the postsynaptic membrane with an average mass around 1 million KDa. The structure appears to be an organized array containing neurotransmitter receptors and signal transduction molecules held together by specialized scaffold proteins.

Molecular characterization of the postsynaptic density
1996The postsynaptic density (PSD) is an electron dense structure just beneath the postsynaptic membrane. Several functions have been proposed for the PSD including regulating receptor number and clustering, anchoring signal transduction molecules at the synapse and mediating adhesion between the presynaptic and postsynaptic membranes.
