Perad se uzgaja prvenstveno zbog mesa i jaja, ali se od nje dobijaju i kvalitetni nuzproizvodi - perje i gnoj. Meso peradi sadrži visoki postotak vrlo vrijednih bjelančevina i mali udjel masti i kolesterola. Bjelančevine mesa peradi imaju veći sadržaj esencijalnih aminokiselina od bjelančevina mesa stoke za klanje. Meso peradi sadrži svega 1, 0 - 2, 5%
