Transduplication resulted in the incorporation of two protein-coding sequences into the Turmoil-1 transposable element of C. elegans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Transposable elements may acquire unrelated gene fragments into their sequences in a process called transduplication. Transduplication of protein-coding genes is common in plants, but is unknown of in animals.

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Effects of pulse-therapy on natural anticoagulant system of the endothelium in nonspecific aortoarteritis

open access: yesТерапевтический архив, 2003
Aim. To investigate the influence of pulse-therapy on anticoagulant system of the endothelium in patients with nonspecific aortoarteritis. Material and methods. Eleven patients (9 females and 2 males, mean age 33.4 ± 8.8 years, the disease duration 5.8 ±

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Thrombomodulin: A key regulator of intravascular blood coagulation, fibrinolysis, and inflammation, and a treatment for disseminated intravascular coagulation

open access: yesProceedings of the Japan Academy. Series B, Physical and Biological Sciences
Thrombomodulin (TM) is an important regulator of intravascular blood coagulation, fibrinolysis, and inflammation. TM inhibits the procoagulant and proinflammatory activities of thrombin and promotes the thrombin-induced activation of protein C (PC) bound

DisCoTune: versatile auxiliary plasmids for the production of disulphide‐containing proteins and peptides in the E. coli T7 system

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, 2021
Summary Secreted proteins and peptides hold large potential both as therapeutics and as enzyme catalysts in biotechnology. The high stability of many secreted proteins helps maintain functional integrity in changing chemical environments and is a ...

Influence of chilled and frozen storage on the stability of trout and herring fillet [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Effects of chilled and frozen storage on specific enthalpy (ΔH) and transition temperature (Td) of protein denaturation as well as on selected functional properties of muscle tissue of rainbow trout and herring were investigated. The Td of myosin shifted

An intracellular transporter mitigates the CO2‐induced decline in iron content in Arabidopsis shoots

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study identifies a gene encoding a transmembrane protein, MIC, which contributes to the reduction of shoot Fe content observed in plants under elevated CO2. MIC is a putative Fe transporter localized to the Golgi and endosomal compartments. Its post‐translational regulation in roots may represent a potential target for improving plant nutrition ...
