The Functions of Mammalian Amyloid Precursor Protein and Related Amyloid Precursor-Like Proteins
Neurodegenerative Diseases, 2006It is well established that proteolytic processing of the β-amyloid precursor protein (APP) generates β-amyloid which plays a central role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease. In contrast, the physiological role of APP and the question of whether a loss of these functions contributes to Alzheimer’s disease are still unclear. For a long time, the

Eukaryotic protein processing: endoproteolysis of precursor proteins
Current Opinion in Biotechnology, 1997Limited endoproteolysis of biologically inactive polypeptide precursors is a general mechanism generating a diversity of biologically active peptides and proteins in all eukaryotic phyla. One of the major recognition motifs involves cleavage at either specific single or pairs of basic residues of the general formula (R/K) - Xn - (R/K) decreases, where ...

Early emergence of protein precursors
Advances in Space Research, 1986For the emergence of protein precursors essential to primitive cells three prerequisites must have been fulfilled: selective aqueous polymerization of proteinaceous amino acids from a complex mixture of small organic compounds, selection of homochiral amino acid sequences and catalytic activity with respect, more precisely, to information transfer ...

Bioinformatic Analysis of Peptide Precursor Proteins
Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2005Abstract: Neuropeptides are among the most important signal molecules in animals. Traditional identification of peptide hormones through peptide purification is a tedious and time‐consuming process. With the advent of the genome sequencing projects, putative peptide precursor can be mined from the genome.

Sequence of an antifreeze protein precursor
European Journal of Biochemistry, 1984The amino acid sequence of the precursor to the second-most-abundant serum antifreeze protein (B) in the winter flounder has been determined by a combination of protein and DNA sequencing. The precursor is an 82-residue preproprotein which differs in only three positions from the amino acid sequence of the precursor for the most-abundant serum ...

Amyloid precursor protein in Alzheimer's disease
2023Amyloid precursor protein (APP) is a membrane protein expressed in several tissues. The occurrence of APP is predominant in synapses of nerve cells. It acts as a cell surface receptor and plays a vital role as a regulator of synapse formation, iron export and neural plasticity.

Precursor keratin protein from human epidermis
British Journal of Dermatology, 1978Prekeratin has been isolated from human epidermis using the method of Matoltsy for bovine nose epidermis. Analysis by sedimentation equilibrium indicates that human prekeratin is heterogeneous in solution. The molecular weight range is from about 200 X 10(3) to at least 2 X 10(6).

Processing of pro-hormone precursor proteins
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1989Peptide-hormones and other biologically active peptides are synthesized as higher molecular weight precursor proteins (pro-proteins) which must undergo post-translational modification to yield the bioactive peptide(s). These post-translational enzymatic events include limited endoproteolysis and may include other modifications of the generated peptide ...

Regulation of Amyloid Precursor Protein Cleavage
Journal of Neurochemistry, 1999Abstract : Multiple lines of evidence suggest that increased production and/or deposition of the β‐amyloid peptide, derived from the amyloid precursor protein, contributes to Alzheimer's disease. A growing list of neuro‐transmitters, growth factors, cytokines, and hormones have been shown to regulate amyloid precursor protein processing.

Identification of microRNA Precursor-Associated Proteins
2018MicroRNA (miRNA) biogenesis is regulated intricately at multiple levels. In addition to transcriptional control of pri-miRNA loci, sequence as well as structural features of the pri-miRNA-stem loop determine its processing efficiency by the endonucleases Drosha and Dicer.
