Omega-3-PUFA, Omega-6-PUFA and Mitochondria

2008
Omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) belong to the essential fatty acids because the body cannot synthesize them and they must be obtained from the diet. That is why the role of the diet in prevention of mitochondrial damage and pathogenesis of hypertension, coronary artery disease, type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis has been ...

Red blood cell PUFAs reflect the phospholipid PUFA composition of major organs

Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids, 2016
Numerous clinical trials examining the use of omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LCPUFAs) on various health outcomes have been conducted, and fish oil remains one of the most widely used nutritional supplements. More recently, studies have begun to utilize the omega-3 index, defined as the sum of EPA+DHA in red blood cells (RBCs), as ...

Whole‐body utilization of n−3 PUFA in n−6 PUFA‐deficient rats

Lipids, 2003
AbstractWe evaluated the utilization of α‐linolenic acid (18∶3n−3) in growing rats consuming a diet deficient in n−6 PUFA. After 90 d, whole‐body 18∶3n−3 accumulation was 55% lower, total n−3 PUFA accumulation was 21% lower, and 18∶3n−3 disappearance was 14% higher in n−6 PUFA‐deficient rats.

Algae and omega-3 PUFAs

Medical alphabet, 2022
Nutrition plays a critical role in health promotion and disease prevention, while nutrition-related factors are in many cases key risk factors contributing to morbidity and mortality. The “modern” diet is increasingly leading to health problems such as overweight and obesity, type 2 diabetes, some types of cancer, neurodegenerative and other diseases ...

n−3 PUFAs in cardiovascular disease

International Journal of Cardiology, 2013
Many large, randomised clinical trials and some meta-analyses have shown that treatment with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) is associated with consistent benefits on cardiovascular (CV) events, primarily due to a reduction of coronary and CV deaths in patients with coronary heart disease.

The Influence of n‐3 PUFA Supplements and n‐3 PUFA Enriched Foods on the n‐3 LC PUFA Intake of Flemish Women

Lipids, 2010
AbstractFood consumption data of Flemish women of reproductive age collected in 2002 showed a large deficit for ALA and n‐3 LC PUFA compared to the recommendations (mean ALA and EPA + DHA intake 1.4 g/day and 209 mg/day, respectively) and indicated a need to tackle the problem of low n‐3 PUFA intake.

PUFA for Prevention and Treatment of Dementia?

Current Pharmaceutical Design, 2009
Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) play a crucial role in cerebral structure and function. Omega-3 PUFA is an exciting area of research, with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) emerging as a new potential agent for prevention of cognitive decline and treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
