Background The mechanisms underlying airflow obstruction in COPD cannot be distinguished by standard spirometry. We ascertain whether mathematical modeling of airway biomechanical properties, as assessed from spirometry, could provide estimates of ...

BackgroundEmphysema is characterised by distinct pathological sub-types, but little is known about the divergent underlying aetiology. Matrix-metalloproteinases (MMPs) are proteolytic enzymes that can degrade the extracellular matrix and have been ...

This study investigated whether blood cell population data, in addition to cell counts, can identify clinically relevant COPD subgroups. Four distinct inflammatory profiles were identified with distinct clinical characteristics. Cell population data have the potential to provide additional insights beyond inflammatory cell counts and improve patient ...

A case report of subconjunctival emphysema as a rare complication of pulmonary resections
Lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) is performed to the selected patients with lung emphysema who have higher residual volume, restricted pulmonary functions and limited diaphragmatic movement. Post-operative prolonged air leak is not uncommon following

In 2005, the combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema (CPFE) was first defined as a distinct entity, which comprised centrilobular or paraseptal emphysema in the upper pulmonary lobes, and fibrosis in the lower lobes accompanied by reduced diffused ...

Prevalence and Spirometric Transitions of PRISm and Obstruction: A Population‐Based Study
ABSTRACT Background and Objective This study aims to assess the prevalence and longitudinal transitions of spirometric patterns defined by the lower limit of normal (LLN) criteria: normal airflow (FEV1/FVC≥LLN, FEV1 ≥ LLN); preserved ratio impaired spirometry (PRISm; FEV1/FVC≥LLN, FEV1 < LLN); or obstruction (FEV1/FVC

There is no gold standard for detecting amiodarone‐induced‐lung injury (AILD). Dual‐Energy‐Computed‐Tomography (DECT) depicts iodine deposition in lungs abnormalities and the liver. We found a substantial correlation between the DECT assessment of AILD and comprehensive clinical evaluation of AILD. DECT can assist in the diagnosis of AILD.

OBJECTIVES Combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema (CPFE) is a unique disorder. The aim of this study was to compare the surgical outcomes of lung cancer patients with CPFE and those with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) without emphysema ...
