Prevalence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection as measured by the QuantiFERON-TB Gold assay and ESAT-6 free IGRA among adolescents in Mwanza, Tanzania [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Background The prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is vastly higher than that of tuberculosis (TB) disease and this enormous reservoir of individuals with LTBI impacts the global TB control strategy. Adolescents are at greatest risk of TB

Predictors of persistently positive Mycobacterium-tuberculosis-specific interferon-gamma responses in the serial testing of health care workers

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases, 2010
Background Data on the performance of Mycobacterium-tuberculosis-specific interferon-(IFN)-γ release assays (IGRAs) in the serial testing of health care workers (HCWs) is limited.

Aqueous extract‐mediated green synthesis of CuO nanoparticles: Potential anti‐tuberculosis agents

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 12, Issue 8, Page 5907-5921, August 2024.
In sum, the mixture of garlic extract and nanoparticles at 100 mg/kg body weight of rats inhibited tuberculosis infection. It exhibited antibacterial activity and antioxidant properties in lung tissue and prevented lung damage. The results are promising and show that garlic extract and nanoparticles can be utilized to prevent tuberculosis.

The Clinical Usefulness of Tuberculin Skin Test versus Interferon-Gamma Release Assays for Diagnosis of Latent Tuberculosis in HIV Patients: A Meta-Analysis. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
BACKGROUND:Accurate diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is becoming increasingly concerning due to the increasing the HIV epidemic, which have increased the risk for reactivation to active tuberculosis (TB) infection.

Utility of the interferon-gamma release assay for latent tuberculosis infection screening among indian health-care workers

open access: yesIndian Journal of Community Medicine, 2021
Background: The utility of interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) screening among health-care workers (HCWs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remains unclear.

Immune responses against Mycobacterium tuberculosis targets associated to latent and active tuberculosis infection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Background: Tuberculosis is a worldwide problem particularly in developing countries. Different clinical outcomes, such as the asymptomatic phase during infection or the symptomatic stage during active disease leads to activation and expansion of ...

Revisiting Bacille Calmette‐Guérin revaccination strategies: timing of immunization, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and non‐tuberculous mycobacteria infections, strain potency and standardization of randomized controlled trials

open access: yesClinical and Translational Discovery, Volume 4, Issue 3, June 2024.
1) Bacille Calmette‐Guérin (BCG) revaccination timing is crucial for enhancing immunity, particularly in adolescents and young adults. 2) Prior Mycobacterium tuberculosis or non‐tuberculous mycobacteria infections may influence the perceived efficacy of BCG revaccination.

Risk factors for indeterminate interferon-gamma release assay for the diagnosis of tuberculosis in children : a systematic review and meta-analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Background: Interferon-gamma release assays (IGRA) are well-established immunodiagnostic tests for tuberculosis (TB) in adults. In children these tests are associated with higher rates of false-negative and indeterminate results.

Prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection in Asian nations: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesImmunity, Inflammation and Disease, Volume 12, Issue 2, February 2024.
Abstract Background Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious public health concern around the world including Asia. TB burden is high in Asian countries and significant population harbor latent tuberculosis infection(LTBI). Aim This systematic review and meta‐analysis aims to evaluate the prevalence of LTBI in Asian countries.

Analysis of cellular and soluble profiles in QuantiFERON nonconverters, converters, and reverters in the Gambia

open access: yesImmunity, Inflammation and Disease, Volume 7, Issue 4, Page 260-270, December 2019., 2019
Here we show immunological factors contributing to QFT conversion and reversion. Our findings provide insight into mechanisms underlying ‘resistance’ to Mycobacterium tuberculosis which could be harnessed for novel immune‐based therapeutics. Abstract Background Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent worldwide ...
