Adaptive Evolution and Distinct Mutation Signatures of Full-Length HBV Quasispecies in HBeAg-Negative Chronic Hepatitis B. [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiologyopen
HBeAg‐negative chronic hepatitis B harbors a highly heterogeneous HBV quasispecies shaped by region‐specific selection. Adaptive strategies underpinning viral persistence include: BCP/PreC mutations supporting replication, PreS/S mutations enabling immune evasion, and overlapping Pol/S mutations maintaining viral fitness.

Natural occurrence of drug resistance mutations to the HIV-1 capsid inhibitor lenacapavir. [PDF]

open access: yesHIV Med
Abstract Aims Lenacapavir (LEN) is a first‐in‐class HIV‐1 capsid inhibitor. We investigated the natural occurrence of LEN drug resistance mutations (DRM) in HIV‐1 sequences from LEN treatment‐naïve individuals. Methods We analysed all available HIV‐1 capsid sequences (n = 21 646) from individuals never exposed to LEN from the Los Alamos National ...

Selective Diversity in RNA Viruses: Do They Know How to Evolve? A Hypothesis. [PDF]

open access: yesBioessays
Among many sophisticated things viruses “learned” during their evolution, could be a simple mechanism for preferential accumulation of genetic variability in regions beneficial for virus survival. Identification of the major players coordinating this selective diversity could find applications in the development of effective prophylactic and ...

Development of a Next‐Generation Sequencing Protocol for Assessing Lenacapavir Resistance in HIV‐1 Capsid

open access: yesJournal of Medical Virology, Volume 98, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Lenacapavir (LEN) is a first‐in‐class capsid inhibitor (CAI) that targets multiple stages of the HIV‐1 lifecycle, showing efficacy in heavily treatment‐experienced (HTE) individuals with multidrug‐resistance (MDR) and in pre‐exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). This study aimed to characterize a novel in‐house next‐generation sequencing (NGS) protocol

Challenges in Diagnosing and Managing Hepatitis E in Transplant Recipients: A Case Report

open access: yesCase Reports in Transplantation, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a common but often underdiagnosed cause of hepatitis in both the general population and transplant patients. Diagnosis is usually made by detecting IgM anti‐HEV antibodies, with immunosuppressed individuals being at higher risk for chronic infection.

Update of the list of QPS‐recommended biological agents intentionally added to food or feeds as notified to EFSA

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 24, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract The qualified presumption of safety (QPS) process was developed to provide a harmonised safety assessment approach to support EFSA Scientific Panels and Units. The QPS approach assesses the taxonomic identity, body of relevant knowledge and safety concerns of microorganisms intentionally added to the food and feed chain.

Quasispecies Theory in Virology [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Virology, 2002
Holmes and Moya claim that quasispecies is an unnecessary and misleading description of RNA virus evolution, that virologists refer to quasispecies inappropriately, and that there is little evidence of quasispecies in RNA virus evolution. They wish to look for other ideas in evolutionary biology and to set down an agenda for future research.

Fidelity Variants and RNA Quasispecies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
By now, it is well established that the error rate of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) that replicates RNA virus genomes is a primary driver of the mutation frequencies observed in RNA virus populations-the basis for the RNA quasispecies.

Hepatitis B Virus Genomic Variability & HBV‐Related Disease Outcomes: A Molecular Epidemiology Perspective

open access: yesJournal of Medical Virology, Volume 97, Issue 12, December 2025.
ABSTRACT HBV infection remains a major global health challenge, characterized by diverse genotypes with distinct geographical distributions and clinical outcomes. Comprehensive analysis of HBV genomic variability and its association with disease progression is essential for improving clinical management and public health strategies. This study aimed to

Quantifying In-Host Quasispecies Evolution

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2023
What takes decades, centuries or millennia to happen with a natural ecosystem, it takes only days, weeks or months with a replicating viral quasispecies in a host, especially when under treatment. Some methods to quantify the evolution of a quasispecies are introduced and discussed, along with simple simulated examples to help in the interpretation and
