Low‐Cost, Large‐Scale Nanoporous Metals by Mechanical Alloying, Oxide Reduction, and Dealloying of Powders

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Powder metal processing provides scalable advantages in nanoporous (np) metal development. Mechanical alloying is used to produce unique precursors for hybrid nanopore formation by oxide reduction and dealloying. As demonstrated in np Ag, this approach improves process efficiency while promoting smaller ligaments and larger pores, both of which are ...

Packaging of Macroscopic Material Payloads: Needs, Challenges, Concepts, and Future Directions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This review introduces a unified framework that decomposes any macroscopic packaging system into the payload, packaging material, and packaging strategy and combines them into a conceptual packaging equation: packaging strategy = payload + packaging material.

Multigroup Radiation Diffusion on a Moving Mesh: Implementation in RICH and Application to Tidal Disruption Events

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series
Radiation hydrodynamics (RHD) determines the bulk evolution and observable emission in a wide variety of high-energy astrophysical phenomena. Due to their complexity, RHD problems must usually be studied through numerical simulations.

A Variational Formalism for the Radiative Transfer Equation and a Geostrophic, Hydrostatic Atmosphere: Prelude to Model 3 [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
The second step in development of MODEL III is summarized. It combines the four radiative transfer equations of the first step with the equations for a geostrophic and hydrostatic atmosphere.

Preconditioned Bi-Conjugate Gradient Method for Radiative Transfer in Spherical Media

open access: yes, 2009
A robust numerical method called the Preconditioned Bi-Conjugate Gradient (Pre-BiCG)method is proposed for the solution of radiative transfer equation in spherical geometry.A variant of this method called Stabilized Preconditioned Bi-Conjugate Gradient ...

Boundary conditions for the diffusion equation in radiative transfer [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Optical Society of America A, 1994
Using the method of images, we examine the three boundary conditions commonly applied to the surface of a semi-infinite turbid medium. We find that the image-charge configurations of the partial-current and extrapolated-boundary conditions have the same dipole and quadrupole moments and that the two corresponding solutions to the diffusion equation are

Prediction of Surface Topography Parameters in Direct Laser Interference Patterning of Stainless Steel Using Infrared Monitoring and Convolutional Neural Networks

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents an infrared monitoring approach for direct laser interference patterning (DLIP) combined with a convolutional neural network (CNN). Thermal emission data captured during structuring are used to predict surface topography parameters.

On the Integration of the Equation of Radiative Transfer. [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1938
The equation of the radiative transfer has been integrated by a generalization of Spitzer's method, which makes use of Bessel functions.

Influence of Sample Preparation and Processing Procedures on the Thermal Diffusivity of MgO‐C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The thermal diffusivity of MgO‐C refractories is highly sensitive to sample preparation and processing procedures. In this article, the effects of coking sequence, machining conditions, structural inhomogeneity, and graphite coating application on measurements using laser flash apparatus are systematically investigated.

Irradiated Atmospheres. I. Heating by Vertical-mixing-induced Energy Transport

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Observations have revealed unique temperature profiles in hot Jupiter atmospheres. We propose that the energy transport by vertical mixing could lead to such thermal features. In our new scenario, strong absorbers, TiO, and VO are not necessary. Vertical
