A Simplified Laminar Flow Model for the Pultrusion of Glass Fiber/Polyethylene Terephthalate Commingled Yarns

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A simplified thermoplastic pultrusion model is developed to predict thermal fields in glass fiber/polyethylene terephthalate (GF/PET) composites with reduced computational cost. By combining effective material homogenization, validation against literature data, and Gaussian‐process‐based optimization, the study reveals how heating limits, pulling speed,

CFD prediction of coupled radiation heat transfer and soot production in turbulent flames [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
The mechanisms governing the formation and destruction of soot in turbulent combustion are intimately coupled to thermal radiation due to the strong dependence of sooting processes and radiative loss on temperature.

Impact of Helium ii Resonant Absorption on the Ultraviolet Background Modeled in Three Dimensions

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We implement a treatment of helium ii absorption and reemission into the Technicolor Dawn cosmological simulations to study its impact on the metagalactic ultraviolet background (UVB) in three dimensions.

Understanding the Capability of Future Direct-imaging Observations to Quantify Atmospheric Chemical Effects of Stellar Proton Events

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 2023
Models developed for Earth are often applied in exoplanet contexts. Validation in extraterrestrial settings can provide an important test of model realism and increase our confidence in model predictions.

Artist: fast radiative transfer for large-scale simulations of the epoch of reionization [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2019
ABSTRACT We introduce the ‘Asymmetric Radiative Transfer In Shells Technique’ (artist), a new method for photon propagation on large scales that explicitly conserves photons, propagates photons at the speed of light, approximately accounts for photon directionality, and closely reproduces results of more detailed radiative transfer (RT ...

Additive Manufacturing of Continuous Fibre Reinforced Composites: Process, Characterisation, Modelling, and Sustainability

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing provides precise control over the placement of continuous fibres within polymer matrices, enabling customised mechanical performance in composite components. This article explores processing strategies, mechanical testing, and modelling approaches for additive manufactured continuous fibre‐reinforced composites.

Photochemical synthesis of a “cage” compound in a microreactor: Rigorous comparison with a batch photoreactor [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
An intramolecular [2 + 2] photocycloaddition is performed in a microphotoreactor (0.81 mL) built by winding FEP tubing around a commercially available Pyrex immersion well in which a medium pressure mercury lamp is inserted.

An Integral-based Technique to Accelerate the Monte Carlo Radiative Transfer Computation for Supernovae

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present an integral-based technique (IBT) algorithm to accelerate supernova (SN) radiative transfer calculations. The algorithm utilizes “integral packets,” which are calculated by the path integral of the Monte Carlo (MC) energy packets, to ...

Recycling of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys: Fundamental and Technological Aspects of a Vacuum Induction Melting Processing Route

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The present study investigates recycling of NiTi shape memory alloys via vacuum induction melting. An ingot was synthesized from elemental Ni and Ti and subjected to three subsequent remelting cycles. Remelting increases process durations and impurity levels and adversely affects microstructures and functional properties.

Lyα Radiative Transfer Modeling for 163 MUSE Lyα-emitting Galaxies at z = 3–6

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We utilized Ly α radiative transfer calculations from H. Song et al. to investigate the properties of extended Ly α halos around star-forming galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, observed by the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer.
