Abstract Starting with a subcutaneous air pouch in the rat, a system was developed in which a thin sheet of connecting tissue was partially separated from its surroundings. In a small area that was depleted of blood vessels by freezing, vascular proliferation was induced by the application of a stimulus employing uric acid and lithium lactate.

There is a world-wide demand for a clinically usable sensitizer for radio-resistant hypoxic cells. After unsuccessful clinical trials of misonidazole, many efforts have been made to develop new sensitizers. In the U.S., Brown and others reported a new drug named SR-2508 (ethanidazole), which is now in phase II and III clinical trials.

Radiotherapists use the terms radiosensitivity and radioresistance in their current work, but no clear definition or unifying concepts exist for these words. Since both denote the magnitude of the response of tissues or cells to radiation, they are relative terms. Absolute radiosensitivity or radioresistance does not exist.
