Derivation of a germline competent transgenic Fischer 344 embryonic stem cell line. [PDF]
Embryonic stem (ES) cell-based gene manipulation is an effective method for the generation of mutant animal models in mice and rats. Availability of germline-competent ES cell lines from inbred rat strains would allow for creation of new genetically ...

Reduced Dietary Protein Induces Changes in the Dental Proteome
Low dietary protein (10%) from normal (20%) does change protein expression in tooth proteome and alter developmental pathways. Among the significant protein expressions changes are actin‐based myosins, tooth, and bone development proteins. Perplexingly tooth size is not altered, suggesting more nuanced phenotypic response to low dietary protein in ...

Genetical genomic determinants of alcohol consumption in rats and humans
Background We have used a genetical genomic approach, in conjunction with phenotypic analysis of alcohol consumption, to identify candidate genes that predispose to varying levels of alcohol intake by HXB/BXH recombinant inbred rat strains.

Abstract The isoproterenol‐induced myocardial infarction model is a well‐established experimental approach for studying cardiac injury and testing potential protective treatments. By overstimulating beta‐adrenergic receptors, this model closely reproduces key features of human heart attacks, including oxidative damage, calcium imbalance, inflammatory ...

Phenotypic Variation in Strength Among Eleven Inbred Strains of Rats
As a first step toward the long-range goal of identifying the genes that determine strength, we subjected 11 inbred strains of rats to three tests of muscular strength. The tests consisted of measuring (1) the force exerted by the rat as it was pulled by the base of the tail off a grid on the pan of a top-loading electronic balance (scale test); (2 ...

Bactrocera fruit flies are significant horticultural pests that cause major economic losses. A “neoclassical approach” incorporating genome editing via CRISPR/Cas9 to develop genetic sexing strains (GSS) could render the sterile insect technique (SIT) against these pests more efficient and cost‐effective.

Controlled study of autoimmunization against liver in inbred rat strains [PDF]
By prolonged immunization of an inbred rat strain with isologous liver homogenate in Freund's complete adjuvant a low grade autoimmune ;cholangitis' with periductular fibrosis has been demonstrated. The lesion could be transferred to isogeneic animals by serial spleen cell injections and was associated with mild but variable delayed skin sensitivity to

Fischer 344 and Lewis rat strains as a model of genetic vulnerability to drug addiction
Today it is well acknowledged that both nature and nurture play important roles in the genesis of psychopathologies, including drug addiction. Increasing evidence suggests that genetic factors contribute for at least 40-60 % of the variation in liability

Neoclassical development of genetic sexing strains for insect pest and disease vector control
The sterile insect technique has been effectively used for decades, and an important component is the availability of sex separation systems, in particular genetic sexing strains. Classical approaches, such as irradiation‐induced chromosomal translocations, have yielded stable strains for species like the Mediterranean fruit fly.

Both social environment and genetic factors are critical for smoking initiation and nicotine addiction. We reported that rats developed conditioned flavor (i.e., taste and odor) aversion to intravenously self-administered (IVSA) nicotine, and that social
