Establishing an assay to evaluate d‐amino acid oxidase enzyme kinetics and inhibition using WST‐8 redox dye

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study investigated a novel WST‐8‐based assay for evaluating d‐Amino acid oxidase (DAO) inhibitors. We confirmed its effectiveness using known inhibitors and found that uremic toxins possess relatively weak inhibitory activity compared to existing drugs.

Reading Predictors in Croatian: Contribution of (Meta)Phonological Variables

open access: yesPsychological Topics, 2021
Phonological awareness (PA), rapid automatised naming (RAN) and working memory (WM) are considered to be the most important factors supporting reading development. However, their relative importance varies across orthographies and age.

What predicts word reading in Arabic?

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2023
Efficient and accurate word reading ability is critical for later reading success. As such, it is important to understand the component skills that underlie strong word reading ability.

Computer aids and human second reading as interventions in screening mammography: two systematic reviews to compare effects on cancer detection and recall rate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Background: There are two competing methods for improving the accuracy of a radiologist interpreting screening mammograms: computer aids (CAD) or independent second reading. Methods: Bibliographic databases were searched for clinical trials.

LSCplus: a fast solution for improving long read accuracy by short read alignment [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Bioinformatics, 2016
Abstract Background The single molecule, real time (SMRT) sequencing technology of Pacific Biosciences enables the acquisition of transcripts from end to end due to its ability to produce extraordinarily long reads (>10 kb). This new method of transcriptome sequencing has been applied to several projects on humans and

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

The Impact of Diplopia on Reading

open access: yesBritish and Irish Orthoptic Journal, 2019
Aim: To compare the effect of induced vertical diplopia (small and large separation) on reading speed and accuracy. Method: The Radner Reading Chart (RRC) was used to measure reading speed (correct words per minute (wpm)) and accuracy (percentage ...

Using quality scores and longer reads improves accuracy of Solexa read mapping [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Bioinformatics, 2008
Abstract Background Second-generation sequencing has the potential to revolutionize genomics and impact all areas of biomedical science. New technologies will make re-sequencing widely available for such applications as identifying genome variations or interrogating the oligonucleotide content of a large sample (e.g ...

Rapid screening of staphylokinase protein variants using an unpurified cell‐free expression system

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An unpurified cell‐free protein synthesis (CFPS) platform enables rapid functional screening of staphylokinase variants. Direct plasminogen‐activation assays performed in microplate format provide real‐time activity readouts, allowing rapid identification and ranking of variants with improved or reduced fibrinolytic activity without protein ...

Lip2AudSpec: Speech reconstruction from silent lip movements video

open access: yes, 2017
In this study, we propose a deep neural network for reconstructing intelligible speech from silent lip movement videos. We use auditory spectrogram as spectral representation of speech and its corresponding sound generation method resulting in a more ...
