Multi‐Targeting Ligands as Prospective Therapeutics for Alzheimer's Disease, a Prevalent Neurodegenerative Disorder: Mechanistic Insights, Emerging Targets and Drug Discovery Campaigns

open access: yesMedicinal Research Reviews, Volume 46, Issue 4, Page 1173-1229, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative condition characterized by progressive cognitive impairment, memory deterioration, and neuronal dysfunction. Its complex pathophysiology involves multiple interlinked processes, including amyloid‐β (Aβ) aggregation, tau hyperphosphorylation, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation ...

Proteomic Profiling of Primary Hippocampal Neurons Reveals Noncanonical GFAP Expression and Metabolic Adaptations in Glia‐Free Culture

open access: yesPROTEOMICS, Volume 26, Issue 7, Page 111-130, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Despite their widespread use as a research model, a comprehensive, quantitative proteomic profile of the cultured hippocampal neurons has remained unexplored. Here, we provide the first global proteomic characterization of primary murine hippocampal neurons cultured for 14 days under near‐physiological glucose conditions (2.5 mM).

Diabetic Retinopathy Severity and Heart Failure Outcomes in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes, Volume 18, Issue 7, July 2026.
In type 2 diabetes, worsening diabetic retinopathy is associated with both systolic and diastolic dysfunction and independently predicts incident heart failure. Routine retinal evaluation may help identify patients at increased microvascular and cardiovascular risk.

Associations of Semaglutide With Skeletal Outcomes in People With Obesity, With and Without Type 2 Diabetes: A Target Trial Emulation

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, Volume 28, Issue 7, Page 5834-5847, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Aims To evaluate the associations between semaglutide initiation and long‐term skeletal outcomes in people with obesity, stratified by type 2 diabetes (T2D) status, using target trial emulation. Materials and Methods This retrospective cohort study used the TriNetX federated electronic health record network.

Proteolysis at the extracellular matrix interface: Molecular architects and regulators in health and disease

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 13, Page 3758-3787, July 2026.
The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a dynamic scaffold that orchestrates tissue architecture and cellular communication. A critical but underexplored interplay between proteases and cluster of differentiation molecules (CD) governs ECM turnover and directs cell fate.

Proteolytic remodelling of the extracellular matrix by pericytes

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 13, Page 3899-3953, July 2026.
Pericytes are specialised perivascular cells intimately connected with endothelial cells and essential for the maintenance of vascular beds. They contribute to the formation and remodelling of the extracellular matrix by actively secreting proteases and protease inhibitors.

Mechanisms and Clinical Manifestations of Age‐Related Impairment in Wound Healing

open access: yesInternational Wound Journal, Volume 23, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Chronic wounds account for a considerable burden on the overall US healthcare system, affecting an estimated 10.2 million people and costing as much as $148 billion dollars in 2022 alone. Elderly patients suffer disproportionately, as nearly 85% of the chronic wound population is over the age of 65 years old.

Association of Triglyceride‐Glucose Index, Triglyceride/HDL Cholesterol Ratio and Metabolic Score for Insulin Resistance With Asymptomatic Organ Damage in Previously Untreated Patients With Hypertension

open access: yesThe Journal of Clinical Hypertension, Volume 28, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT We aimed to examine the association between insulin resistance (IR) and target organ damage (TOD) in patients with hypertension. Three indices of IR (Triglyceride‐Glucose index: TyG; triglyceride‐to‐HDL ratio: TG/HDL‐C; Metabolic Score for Insulin Resistance: METS‐IR) were examined for their association with TOD in 614 newly diagnosed patients

Body mass index and peripheral neuropathy across the glucose tolerance spectrum in Japanese adults

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes Investigation, Volume 17, Issue 7, Page 1142-1153, July 2026.
Graphical illustration of participant classification by metabolic status (normoglycemic, IGT, type 2 diabetes mellitus) and BMI with key neurological and metabolic assessments. In Japanese adults, obesity at the Japanese BMI threshold (≥25 kg/m2) is associated with adverse metabolic profiles across all glycemic states but exacerbates peripheral ...
