Sensory Purinergic Receptor P2X3 Is Elevated in Burning Mouth Syndrome
International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2010Recent studies show that P2X(3) may play a role in neuropathic pain, including orofacial pain. Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic neuropathic pain condition affecting 0.6-12% of post-menopausal women in the Western world. This study evaluates, for the first time, P2X(3) immunoreactivity levels in lingual mucosa in BMS patients.

Roles of Ectodomain and Transmembrane Regions in Ethanol and Agonist Action in Purinergic P2X2 and P2X3 Receptors [PDF]
The present work investigated sites of ethanol action in ATP-gated P2X receptors (P2XRs) using chimeric strategies that exploited the differences in ethanol response between P2X2R (inhibition) and P2X3R (potentiation). We tested ethanol (10-200mM) effects on ATP- and alpha,beta-methylene-ATP (alpha,beta-meATP)-induced currents in wildtype P2X2, P2X3 ...

Binding thermodynamic characterization of human P2X1 and P2X3 purinergic receptors
Biochemical Pharmacology, 2008The present study was designed to perform binding and thermodynamic characterization of human P2X1 and P2X3 purinergic receptors expressed in HEK 293 cells. The thermodynamic parameters DeltaG degrees , DeltaH degrees and DeltaS degrees (standard free energy, enthalpy and entropy) of the binding equilibrium of well-known purinergic agonists and ...

Modulation of Bladder Afferent Signals in Normal and Spinal Cord-Injured Rats by Purinergic P2X3 and P2X2/3 Receptors [PDF]
What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? It is well known that urinary bladder sensation requires the activation by ATP of ionotropic purinergic P2X3/P2X2/3 receptors located in bladder afferent C‐fibres. Furthermore, in rat models

To evaluate whether the purinergic receptor subtype P2X3 (P2X3R) in trigeminal ganglion (TG) neurons is involved in hyperalgesia of the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) and masseter muscles associated with placement of an occlusal interference.Forty-five rats were randomized into five groups (ie, for days 1, 3, 7, 14, or 28; nine rats per group).

Intraganglionic laminar endings (IGLEs) represent the most prominent vagal afferent terminal structures throughout the gastrointestinal tract. They are most prominent in the esophagus and stomach, but can be found down to the distal colon. Their role as mechanosensors as proposed on anatomical grounds was recently substantiated in elegant functional ...

Patients with epilepsy require improved medications. Purinergic receptors were identified as late as 1976 and are slowly emerging as potential drug targets for the discovery of antiseizure medications. While compounds interacting with these receptors have been approved for use as medicines (e.g., gefapixant for cough) and continue to be explored for a ...

P2X receptors are ligand-gated ion channels activated by ATP. They are expressed in a broad variety of tissues. To date, eight P2X receptor subunits (P2X(1)-P2X(7), P2XM) have been cloned. In spite of the considerable evidence of signaling by extracellular nucleotides in other sensory systems, only few studies have been undertaken in the retina.
