Monascustin, an Unusual γ-Lactam from Red Yeast Rice

Journal of Natural Products, 2016
Monascustin (1), an unusual γ-lactam, was isolated from an ethanol extract of the Monascus purpureus fermented rice. Its structure including the absolute configuration was determined by spectroscopic data analysis and confirmed by X-ray crystallography. A plausible biosynthetic pathway is discussed on the basis of amino acid derivatization.

[Red yeast rice, monacolin K, and pleiotropic effects.]

Recenti progressi in medicina, 2018
The extracts of red yeast rice represent a nutraceutical with proven cholesterol lowering effect. Its efficacy is proportional to the concentration on monacolin K in the extract that could reach the amount of 10 mg per daily dose. The daily assumption of monacolin K could then reduce LDL-cholesterol plasma levels by 15-25% in 6-8 weeks.

[Trace phenolic compounds from Red Yeast Rice].

Zhongguo Zhong yao za zhi = Zhongguo zhongyao zazhi = China journal of Chinese materia medica, 2019
Trace chemical constituents from the ethyl acetate extract of Red Yeast Rice were investigated. Four phenolic compounds were isolated by various column chromatographies, and their structures were identified on the basis of spectroscopic analysis including UV, MS, IR and NMR. The four compounds were identified as 2-methyl-5-(2'R-methyl-4'-hydroxy-butyl)-

[Red yeast rice: An unsafe food supplement?]

Bundesgesundheitsblatt, Gesundheitsforschung, Gesundheitsschutz, 2017
Red yeast rice is the fermentation product of the mould Monascus ruber and is traditionally used in East Asia to dye and conserve food. Its main pharmacologically active compound, monakolin K, was isolated from red yeast rice and is used as an inhibitor of cholesterol synthesis under the INN lovastatin. Lovastatin and several other statins are marketed
