Biodegradable and Recyclable Luminescent Mixed‐Matrix‐Membranes, Hydrogels, and Cryogels based on Nanoscale Metal‐Organic Frameworks and Biopolymers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The study presents biodegradable and recyclable mixed‐matrix membranes (MMMs), hydrogels, and cryogels using luminescent nanoscale metal‐organic frameworks (nMOFs) and biopolymers. These bio‐nMOF‐MMMs combine europium‐based nMOFs as probes for the status of the materials with the biopolymers agar and gelatine and present alternatives to conventional ...

Plant resistance to drought depends on timely stomatal closure.

open access: yesEcology Letters, 2017
Stomata play a significant role in the Earth's water and carbon cycles, by regulating gaseous exchanges between the plant and the atmosphere. Under drought conditions, stomatal control of transpiration has long been thought to be closely coordinated with

Biomass Native Structure Into Functional Carbon‐Based Catalysts for Fenton‐Like Reactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study indicates that eight biomasses with 2D flaky and 1D acicular structures influence surface O types, morphology, defects, N doping, sp2 C, and Co nanoparticles loading in three series of carbon, N‐doped carbon, and cobalt/graphitic carbon. This work identifies how these structural factors impact catalytic pathways, enhancing selective electron

Temperatures above 37°C increase virulence of a convergent Klebsiella pneumoniae sequence type 307 strain

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology
BackgroundConvergence of Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP) pathotypes has been increasingly reported in recent years. These pathogens combine features of both multidrug-resistant and hypervirulent KP.

Novel Research Models for Staphylococcus aureus Small Colony Variants (SCV) Development: Co-pathogenesis and Growth Rate

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2020
Staphylococcus aureus remains a great burden on the healthcare system. Despite prescribed treatments often seemingly to be successful, S. aureus can survive and cause a relapsing infection which cannot be cleared.

An institutional sociology perspective of the implementation of activity based costing by Spanish health care institutions [PDF]

open access: yes
According to institutional sociology, hospitals will respond to external environmental pressures and adopt Activity-Based-Costing (ABC). This theory overemphasizes conformity and fails to consider the advantages of organizational non-conformance.

The role of forest genetic resources in responding to biotic and abiotic factors in the context of anthropogenic climate change [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The current distribution of forest genetic resources on Earth is the result of a combination of natural processes and human actions. Over time, tree populations have become adapted to their habitats including the local ecological disturbances they face ...

Unlock the Walnut: How a Pectin‐Rich Suture Tissue and Moisture‐Driven Crack Formation Induce Shell Splitting and Facilitate Seed Germination

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Walnut seeds are enclosed in a remarkably strong shell made of sclerenchyma, separated by a pectin‐rich suture tissue. Different cell shapes and chemical composition of this tissue point to an opening mechanism, which is triggered by cyclic humidity changes.
