Co-staining of reticulocytes and parasites reveals ex vivo P. vivax Sal-1 is found in reticulocytes of different maturity. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
(A) Heilmeyer classification according to [19.22]. The youngest reticulocytes will have a dense reticulum network when stained with NMB (Heilmeyer I), older reticulocytes will have a mild reticulum network (Heilmeyer II-III) and the oldest reticulocytes ...

Hydroxyurea (hydroxycarbamide) use in adults with haemoglobin SC disease: A real‐world study in Quebec

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
Summary Haemoglobin SC (HbSC) disease is the second most prevalent form of sickle cell disease, but evidence for hydroxyurea (hydroxycarbamide; HU) to prevent pain episodes was limited until the prospective identification of variables as outcomes for treatment (PIVOT) trial.

FACs sorting of reticulocytes and extruded nuclei. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
A) Extruded nuclei and reticulocytes were separated by fluorescence activated cell sorting based on fluorescence intensity of DNA (Hoechst) and GPA (BRIC256) staining as outlined in the Materials and Methods.

On the Evolution and Function of Plasmodium vivax Reticulocyte Binding Surface Antigen (pvrbsa)

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2018
The RBSA protein is encoded by a gene described in Plasmodium species having tropism for reticulocytes. Since this protein is antigenic in natural infections and can bind to target cells, it has been proposed as a potential candidate for an anti ...

Red lines and green lights: Gene therapy for inherited erythroid disorders beyond the haemoglobinopathies

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
Gene therapy is revolutionizing treatment paradigms for haemoglobinopathies, establishing a translational framework for disorders that impact red blood cell development. In their paper, Joshi et al. describe the preclinical and early clinical landscape of gene therapies for non‐haemoglobinopathy erythroid disorders and highlight common thematic ...

The Immature Reticulocyte Fraction (IRF) in the Sysmex XN-1000V Analyzer Can Differentiate between Causes of Regenerative and Non-Regenerative Anemia in Dogs and Cats

open access: yesAnimals
The Sysmex XN-1000V analyzer can identify those reticulocytes with high RNA content and fluorescence, providing the immature reticulocyte fraction (IRF).

Identification of predictive factors for reversal of cerebral vasculopathy in an original longitudinal cohort study in newborns with sickle cell anaemia

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
Summary Cerebral macrovasculopathy (CV) is a major complication in children with sickle cell anaemia (SCA) and usually requires a long‐term transfusion programme (TP) to prevent stroke. This study aimed to identify factors predicting reversal of CV on TP in a single‐centre newborn cohort. Among 375 patients, 50 presented CV and received TP.

Variation in antenatal anaemia guidelines across the NHS in the United Kingdom: A cross‐sectional study

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
Summary Antenatal anaemia affects up to 30% of pregnant women in the United Kingdom and is a recognised clinical priority. National management guidance is published by the British Society of Haematology (BSH), but the extent to which local National Health Service (NHS) guidelines align with it is unknown.
