Matrix Metalloproteinase 13 Is Associated with Age-Related Choroidal Neovascularization

open access: yesAntioxidants, 2023
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of severe vision loss in older individuals in developed countries. Despite advances in our understanding of AMD, its pathophysiology remains poorly understood.

Ginsenoside protopanaxadiol protects adult retinal pigment epithelial-19 cells from chloroquine by modulating autophagy and apoptosis

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2022
Chloroquine often causes serious eye and vision problems, which are mainly mediated by lysosomotropic alteration. In this study, we investigated whether the ginsenoside protopanaxadiol relieves chloroquine-induced retinopathy by restoring lysosomotropic ...

Generating retinal neurons by reprogramming retinal pigment epithelial cells [PDF]

open access: yesExpert Opinion on Biological Therapy, 2010
Retinal degenerations cause blindness. One potential therapy is cell replacement. Because the human retina lacks regeneration capacity, much attention has been directed towards searching for cells that can differentiate into retinal neurons. We discuss the possibility of using transcription factor genes to channel retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells'

Infection of Human Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells with Dengue Virus Strains Isolated during Outbreaks in Singapore

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2022
Prevalence of dengue retinopathy varies across epidemics, with the disease linked to circulation of dengue virus serotype 1 (DENV-1). The retinal pigment epithelium has been implicated in the pathology.

Exocytosis by Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells

open access: yesOphthalmic Research, 2009
We observed cultured retinal pigment epithelial cells as they responded to the introduction of latex particles. The cells showed phagocytosis of particles 1 h after administration of latex and were filled with particles after 24 h. After 7 days, exocytosis of latex from basal plasma membrane was documented.

Biological effects of cigarette smoke in cultured human retinal pigment epithelial cells. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The goal of the present study was to determine whether treatment with cigarette smoke extract (CSE) induces cell loss, cellular senescence, and extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis in primary human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. Primary cultured

Widespread subclinical cellular changes revealed across a neural-epithelial-vascular complex in choroideremia using adaptive optics

open access: yesCommunications Biology, 2022
The in vivo pathogenesis of the blinding retinal degeneration choroideremia is visualized, which reveals enlarged and area-disrupted retinal pigment epithelial cells, providing evidence for polymegathism in choroideremia.

Profound Re-Organization of Cell Surface Proteome in Equine Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells in Response to In Vitro Culturing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The purpose of this study was to characterize the cell surface proteome of native compared to cultured equine retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells. The RPE plays an essential role in visual function and represents the outer blood-retinal barrier.

Preclinical Evaluation of a Cell-Based Gene Therapy Using the Sleeping Beauty Transposon System in Choroidal Neovascularization

open access: yesMolecular Therapy: Methods & Clinical Development, 2019
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive retinal disorder characterized by imbalanced pro- and antiangiogenic signals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ex vivo cell-based gene therapy with stable expression of human ...

A defined subset of clonal retinal stem cell spheres is biased to RPE differentiation

open access: yesiScience, 2021
Summary: Retinal stem cells (RSCs) are rare pigmented cells found in the pigmented ciliary layer of the mammalian retina. Studies show that RSCs can replicate to maintain the stem cell pool and produce retinal progenitors that differentiate into all ...
