Radiosensitization of gliomas by intracellular generation of 5-fluorouracil potentiates prodrug activator gene therapy with a retroviral replicating vector. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
A tumor-selective non-lytic retroviral replicating vector (RRV), Toca 511, and an extended-release formulation of 5-fluorocytosine (5-FC), Toca FC, are currently being evaluated in clinical trials in patients with recurrent high-grade glioma (NCT01156584,

Investigating the role of SARM1 in central nervous system

open access: yesIbrain, EarlyView.
Sterile‐α and Toll/interleukin 1 receptor (TIR) motif‐containing protein 1 (SARM1) is a pivotal molecule that has garnered extensive attention in neuroscience. As an intracellular molecule, SARM1 possesses various crucial biological functions in the nervous system.

The Dynamic Interplay between HIV-1, SAMHD1, and the Innate Antiviral Response

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2017
The innate immune response constitutes the first cellular line of defense against initial HIV-1 infection. Immune cells sense invading virus and trigger signaling cascades that induce antiviral defenses to control or eliminate infection.

Differential resistance to cell entry by porcine endogenous retrovirus subgroup A in rodent species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Background: The risk of zoonotic infection by porcine endogenous retroviruses (PERV) has been highlighted in the context of pig-to-human xenotransplantation. The use of receptors for cell entry often determines the host range of retroviruses.

The Mongoose, the Pheasant, the Pox, and the Retrovirus

open access: yesPLoS Biology, 2013
Paleovirology is the study of ancient viruses. The existence of a paleovirus can sometimes be detected by virtue of its accidental insertion into the germline of different animal species, which allows one to date when the virus actually existed. However, the ancient and the modern often connect, as modern viruses have unexpected origins that can be ...

Viral metagenomics of Okavango Delta water pans reveal novel insights into wildlife disease potential

open access: yesiMetaOmics, EarlyView.
Botswana's Seronga region saw a mass elephant die‐off potentially linked to water sources. This study analyzes Okavango Delta metagenomes, uncovering a diversity of viruses and harmful pathogens. Findings highlight the importance of understanding viral ecology in these waters and support One Health's objective in protecting human, animal, and ecosystem

Haplotype‐resolved genome and pan‐genome graphs reveal the impacts of structural variation on functional genome and feather colors in chickens

open access: yesiMetaOmics, EarlyView.
This study built a Wenchang chicken haplotype genome and integrated it with 29 others to create a chicken pangenome atlas. Analysis of 354 chickens revealed 185,205 structural variations (SVs), with one‐third derived from homology‐based and transposable elements.

Barriers to infection of human cells by feline leukemia virus: insights into resistance to zoonosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The human genome displays a rich fossil record of past gamma-retrovirus infections, yet no current epidemic is evident, despite environmental exposure to viruses that infect human cells in vitro.

The Epidemiology of Koala Retrovirus

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Epidemiology, 2011
A novel Gammaretrovirus, named Koala retrovirus (KoRV) was identified in koalas in 2000. Subsequent testing has shown that KoRV appears to be widespread throughout the wild koala population in Australia. KoRV is apparently unique in that it is the only known example of an exogenous retrovirus which is actively undergoing the process of endogenisation ...

Annual dynamics and metagenomics of marine vesicles: One more layer of complexity in the dissolved organic fraction

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, EarlyView.
Abstract Despite the role of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in genetic and biogeochemical exchange in the ocean, there is a notable dearth of studies delving into the seasonal annual dynamics of EVs in uncultured microbial communities. Here, quantitative data from the oligotrophic Mediterranean Sea revealed that EVs mL−1 ranged from 104 to 106 throughout
