PRMT5 Is Upregulated in HTLV-1-Mediated T-Cell Transformation and Selective Inhibition Alters Viral Gene Expression and Infected Cell Survival

open access: yesViruses, 2015
Human T-cell leukemia virus type-1 (HTLV-1) is a tumorigenic retrovirus responsible for development of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL). This disease manifests after a long clinical latency period of up to 2–3 decades.

Barriers to infection of human cells by feline leukemia virus: insights into resistance to zoonosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The human genome displays a rich fossil record of past gamma-retrovirus infections, yet no current epidemic is evident, despite environmental exposure to viruses that infect human cells in vitro.

Inhibition of human endogenous retrovirus-K by antiretroviral drugs

open access: yesRetrovirology, 2017
BackgroundHuman endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) are genomic sequences of retroviral origin which were believed to be integrated into germline chromosomes millions of years ago and account for nearly 8% of the human genome.

Tumor clusters with divergent inflammation and human retroelement expression determine the clinical outcome of patients with serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Analysis of treatment‐naïve high‐grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC) and control tissues for ERVs, LINE‐1 (L1), inflammation, and immune checkpoints identified five clusters with diverse patient recurrence‐free survivals. An inflammation score was calculated and correlated with retroelement expression, where one novel cluster (Triple‐I) with high ...

Retrovirus Silencing by an Epigenetic TRIM [PDF]

open access: yesCell, 2007
Embryonic cells silence transcription by retroviruses, but how do they recognize virus DNA? In this issue, Wolf and Goff (2007) report that a TRIM28 corepressor complex binds to the retrovirus primer binding site. Epigenetic silencing of retrovirus transcription is accomplished by "writing" a dimethyl mark on lysine 9 of histone H3 that is read by the ...

The critical role of DNA damage‐inducible transcript 4 (DDIT4) in stemness character of leukemia cells and leukemia initiation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Stemness properties, including quiescence, self‐renewal, and chemoresistance, are closely associated with leukemia relapse. Here, we demonstrate that DNA damage‐inducible transcript 4 (DDIT4) is induced in the hypoxic bone marrow niche and is essential for maintaining the stemness of AML1‐ETO9a leukemia cells.

High levels of anti‐Nef antibodies may prevent AIDS disease progression in vertically HIV‐1‐infected infants

open access: yesJournal of the International AIDS Society, 2014
Introduction HIV‐1‐associated CD4+ T‐cell depletion is a consequence of uninfected cell death. Nef is one of the viral factors that trigger apoptosis on bystander cells, though the plasma Nef levels do not correlate with Th lymphocytes counts. The aim of

An optimized retroviral toolbox for overexpression and genetic perturbation of primary lymphocytes

open access: yesBiology Open, 2022
Genetic manipulation of primary lymphocytes is crucial for both clinical purposes and fundamental research. Despite their broad use, we encountered a paucity of data on systematic comparison and optimization of retroviral vectors, the workhorses of ...

Clinical Characteristics of Parkinsonism in HTLV‐1‐Associated Myelopathy

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Human T‐lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV‐1)‐associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) is the classic neurological manifestation of HTLV‐1 infection; however, this virus has also been associated with other neurological disorders. Concurrent parkinsonism is relatively rare and presents diagnostic challenges.
