Superresolution microscopy reveals linkages between ribosomal DNA on heterologous chromosomes

open access: yesJournal of Cell Biology, 2019
Potapova et al. use superresolution microscopy to describe linkages between ribosomal DNA on heterologous human chromosomes whose formation depends on the transcription factor UBF and topoisomerase II.

Early life stress inhibits expression of ribosomal RNA in the developing hippocampus. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Children that are exposed to abuse or neglect show abnormal hippocampal function. However, the developmental mechanisms by which early life stress (ELS) impairs normal hippocampal development have not been elucidated. Here we propose that exposure to ELS

The Mitochondrial Myopathy, Encephalopathy, Lactic Acidosis, and Stroke-like Episode Syndrome-associated Human Mitochondrial tRNALeu(UUR) Mutation Causes Aminoacylation Deficiency and Concomitant Reduced Association of mRNA with Ribosomes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
The pathogenetic mechanism of the mitochondrial tRNALeu(UUR) A3243G transition associated with the mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome has been investigated in transmitochondrial cell lines ...

Keeping ribosomal DNA intact: a repeating challenge

open access: yesChromosome Research, 2018
More than half of the human genome consists of repetitive sequences, with the ribosomal DNA (rDNA) representing two of the largest repeats. Repetitive rDNA sequences may form a threat to genomic integrity and cellular homeostasis due to the challenging ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Conservative Fragments in Bacterial 16S rRNA Genes and Primer Design for 16S Ribosomal DNA Amplicons in Metagenomic Studies

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2009
Bacterial 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) amplicons have been widely used in the classification of uncultured bacteria inhabiting environmental niches. Primers targeting conservative regions of the rDNAs are used to generate amplicons of variant regions that ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Evaluation of COI and ITS2 sequences ability to distinguish Lysiphlebus fabarum and Lysiphlebus confusus (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) [PDF]

open access: yesنامه انجمن حشره‌شناسی ایران, 2012
All wasp species in the genus Lysiphlebus Förster are solitary endoparasitoids of aphids andconsidered a taxonomically difficult group. In this study a part of COI and ITS2 was used to distinguishtwo closely related species L.

Copy Number of Human Ribosomal Genes With Aging: Unchanged Mean, but Narrowed Range and Decreased Variance in Elderly Group

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2018
Introduction: The multi-copied genes coding for the human 18, 5.8, and 28S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) are located in five pairs of acrocentric chromosomes forming so-called rDNA.

Potential of Mitochondrial Ribosomal Genes as Cancer Biomarkers Demonstrated by Bioinformatics Results

open access: yesFrontiers in Oncology, 2022
Next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics analyses have clearly revealed the roles of mitochondrial ribosomal genes in cancer development. Mitochondrial ribosomes are composed of three RNA components encoded by mitochondrial DNA and 82 specific ...
