Genome-wide profiling of uncapped mRNA [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Gene transcripts are under extensive posttranscriptional regulation, including the regulation of their stability. A major route for mRNA degradation produces uncapped mRNAs, which can be generated by decapping enzymes, endonucleases, and small RNAs ...

Short RNA half-lives in the slow-growing marine cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background: RNA turnover plays an important role in the gene regulation of microorganisms and influences their speed of acclimation to environmental changes.

Mechanistic insights into recruitment and regulation of the RNA helicase UPF1 in replication-dependent histone mRNA decay

open access: yesNature Communications
Metazoan histone mRNAs are a unique class of mRNAs that lack the poly(A) tail present in all other eukaryotic transcripts. Instead, they end in a conserved stem-loop (SL) structure, necessitating a decay mechanism that is distinct from deadenylation ...

Coulomb renormalization and ratio of proton and neutron asymptotic normalization coefficients for mirror nuclei

open access: yes, 2012
Asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANCs) are fundamental nuclear constants playing important role in nuclear reactions, nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics.

Identification and functional analysis of novel phosphorylation sites in the RNA surveillance protein Upf1. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
One third of inherited genetic diseases are caused by mRNAs harboring premature termination codons as a result of nonsense mutations. These aberrant mRNAs are degraded by the Nonsense-Mediated mRNA Decay (NMD) pathway.

Use of Cellular Decapping Activators by Positive-Strand RNA Viruses

open access: yesViruses, 2016
Positive-strand RNA viruses have evolved multiple strategies to not only circumvent the hostile decay machinery but to trick it into being a priceless collaborator supporting viral RNA translation and replication.

RNA-controlled nucleocytoplasmic shuttling of mRNA decay factors regulates mRNA synthesis and a novel mRNA decay pathway

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
Nucleocytoplasmic shuttling of several yeast mRNA decay factors regulates transcription and initiates a novel mRNA decay pathway; shuttling is controlled by the decaying RNA and is critical for coping with environmental changes.

Identification and characterization of novel factors that act in the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay pathway in nematodes, flies and mammals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) is a surveillance mechanism that degrades mRNAs harboring premature termination codons (PTCs). We have conducted a genome-wide RNAi screen in Caenorhabditis elegans that resulted in the identification of five novel NMD ...

Widespread Co-translational RNA Decay Reveals Ribosome Dynamics [PDF]

open access: yesCell, 2015
It is generally assumed that mRNAs undergoing translation are protected from decay. Here, we show that mRNAs are, in fact, co-translationally degraded. This is a widespread and conserved process affecting most genes, where 5'-3' transcript degradation follows the last translating ribosome, producing an in vivo ribosomal footprint.

The role of RNA helicases in aging and lifespan regulation

open access: yesTranslational Medicine of Aging, 2017
RNA helicases are members of a large family of enzymes that function in unwinding RNA duplexes and modulating interactions between RNAs and proteins. RNA helicases participate in numerous cellular processes, including transcription, translation, mRNA ...
