Cauliflower mosaic virus Transcriptome Reveals a Complex Alternative Splicing Pattern. [PDF]
The plant pararetrovirus Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) uses alternative splicing to generate several isoforms from its polycistronic pregenomic 35S RNA. This pro-cess has been shown to be essential for infectivity.

Widespread use of non-productive alternative splice sites in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. [PDF]
Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been used as a model system to investigate the mechanisms of pre-mRNA splicing but only a few examples of alternative splice site usage have been described in this organism.

Splice site proximity influences alternative exon definition
Alternative splicing enables higher eukaryotes to expand mRNA diversity from a finite number of genes through highly combinatorial splice site selection mechanisms that are influenced by the sequence of competing splice sites, cis-regulatory elements ...

Codon degeneracy of amino acid sequences permits an additional “mRNP code” layer underlying the genetic code that is related to RNA processing. In pre-mRNA splicing, splice site usage is determined by both intrinsic strength and sequence context ...

Spliceozymes: ribozymes that remove introns from pre-mRNAs in trans. [PDF]
Group I introns are pre-mRNA introns that do not require the spliceosome for their removal. Instead, they fold into complex three-dimensional structures and catalyze two transesterification reactions, thereby excising themselves and joining the flanking ...

Characterization of human RNA splice signals by iterative functional selection of splice sites
An iterative in vitro splicing strategy was employed to select for optimal 3' splicing signals from a pool of pre-mRNAs containing randomized regions. Selection of functional branchpoint sequences in HeLa cell nuclear extract yielded a sequence motif that evolved from UAA after one round of splicing toward a UACUAAC consensus after seven rounds.

GC content around splice sites affects splicing through pre-mRNA secondary structures
Background Alternative splicing increases protein diversity by generating multiple transcript isoforms from a single gene through different combinations of exons or through different selections of splice sites.

Induction of cryptic pre-mRNA splice-switching by antisense oligonucleotides
Antisense oligomers (AOs) are increasingly being used to modulate RNA splicing in live cells, both for research and for the development of therapeutics.

The Localization of Sites Containing Nascent RNA and Splicing Factors
Sites of transcription in the HeLa nucleus are not diffusely spread throughout euchromatin but are concentrated in approximately 2000 discrete sites or "transcription factories." These sites can be immunolabeled after allowing permeabilized cells to elongate nascent RNA chains in the presence of BrUTP.

Homologous SV40 RNA trans-splicing: Special case or prime example of viral RNA trans-splicing?
To date the Simian Virus 40 (SV40) is the only proven example of a virus that recruits the mechanism of RNA trans-splicing to diversify its sequences and gene products.
