A Prebiotic Ribosylation of Pyrimidine Nucleobases Enabled by Metal Cations and Clay Minerals

open access: yesLife, 2021
We report a prebiotically relevant solution to the N1-ribosylation of pyrimidine nucleobases, a well-known challenge to the RNA world hypothesis. We found that the presence of metal cations and clay minerals enable the previously unachievable direct ...

In vitro Evolution and Engineering for Improved Ribozyme Polymerase Production [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
According to the "RNA World Hypothesis" the first self replicating molecule formed from the prebiotic chemicals is the ribozyme. A model compartmentalized self replicating system for ribozyme polymerases is designed and used to improve activity,

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Brave new RNA world(s): from prebiotic chemistry to gene regulation and RNA technology

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics
RNA has long provided a plausible route by which heredity and catalysis could become linked in early evolution, and the same chemical versatility helps explain why RNA remains central to origin-of-life research, modern cell biology, and biotechnology ...

RNA can function as molecular chaperone for RNA folding

open access: yesGiant, 2020
RNAs can mimic the information storage, replication and catalysis functions of DNAs and proteins, providing physical evidence for the widely accepted RNA world hypothesis that RNA alone constitutes earlier life forms.

RNA origin of life [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
RNA molekula sadrži genetičku informaciju i ima katalitičku ulogu, te je stoga možemo smatrati pramolekulom života. Njena uloga je vrlo bitna i u danas u biologiji.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

The social brain: neural basis of social knowledge [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Social cognition in humans is distinguished by psychological processes that allow us to make inferences about what is going on inside other people—their intentions, feelings, and thoughts.

Linking neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis, and myelination defects to neurodevelopmental disruption in primary mitochondrial disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial remodeling shapes neural and glial lineage progression by matching metabolic supply with demand. Elevated OXPHOS supports differentiation and myelin formation, while myelin compaction lowers mitochondrial dependence, revealing mitochondria as key drivers of developmental energy adaptation.
