Satellite cells in the regenerated and regrafted skeletal muscles of rats
Experientia, 1988Soleus (SOL) muscles were grafted into extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle beds (EDL-first-graft). Sixty days later, some mature EDL-first-grafts were regrafted into their own beds (EDL-second-grafts). Fully regenerated muscle fibers and satellite cells were observed in both types of mature grafts.

Interaction between satellite cells and skeletal muscle fibers
Development, 1990Abstract Single myofibers with attached satellite cells isolated from adult rats were used to study the influence of the mature myofiber on the proliferation of satellite cells. The satellite cells remain quiescent when cultured in serum containing medium but proliferate when exposed to mitogen from an extract of crushed adult muscle ...

Fine structure of satellite cells in growing skeletal muscle
American Journal of Anatomy, 1976AbstractThe morphology of satellite cells was investigated in skeletal muscle from mice of various ages between 7 days and 50 weeks. Satellite cells of very young muscle had abundant cytoplasm which was rich in organelles. Free ribosomes were abundant and usually arranged into polysomes of 5–6 units.

Skeletal Muscle Stem Cells in the Spotlight: The Satellite Cell
2011The formation of striated muscle during embryogenesis involves morphogenetic programs that orchestrate the development of the functional units of skeletal muscle – the myofibers. These multinucleated syncytia share with cardiomyocytes some structural and contractile characteristics that commonly define skeletal and cardiac muscles as sarcomeric muscles.

The role of Talpid3 in skeletal muscle satellite cells and skeletal muscle regeneration [PDF]
The primary cilium has recently been recognised as an essential regulator of the Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signalling pathway. Mutations that disrupt cilia function in humans can cause conditions known as ciliopathies. A wide range of phenotypes is observed in chick and mouse ciliopathy models, including polydactyly, craniofacial defects and polycystic ...
