Tityus serrulatus Hypotensins: A new family of peptides from scorpion venom

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2008
Using a proteomic approach, a new structural family of peptides was put in evidence in the venom of the yellow scorpion Tityus serrulatus. Tityus serrulatus Hypotensins (TsHpt) are random-coiled linear peptides and have a similar bradykinin-potentiating peptide (BPP) amino acid signature.

Scorpion Venom Peptides Accelerate Hematopoietic Recovery of Myelosuppression in Irradiated Mice

The American Journal of Chinese Medicine, 2009
Sublethally irradiated mice were administered with scorpion venom peptides (SVP) or with PBS in the saline control group, 3 days before and 7 consecutive days after irradiation. Hematopoietic recovery was assessed by bone marrow (BM) cell proliferation index (PI) and colony forming unit-granulocyte/macrophage (CFU-GM), spleen weight index (SI) and ...

Cationic peptides from scorpion venom can stimulate and inhibit polymorphonuclear granulocytes

Toxicon, 2002
We have isolated two cationic peptides, sharing partial homology with each other, from the venom of South African scorpions. Both synthetic peptides-one containing 44 amino acids, the other containing 45 amino acids-were constructed. At submicromolar concentrations they can activate granulocytes as evidenced by a concentration dependent chemotaxis and ...

Inhibition of CFTR channels by a peptide toxin of scorpion venom

American Journal of Physiology-Cell Physiology, 2004
Peptide toxins have been valuable probes in efforts to identify amino acid residues that line the permeation pathway of cation-selective channels. However, no peptide toxins have been identified that interact with known anion-selective channels such as the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR).

Extreme diversity of scorpion venom peptides and proteins revealed by transcriptomic analysis: Implication for proteome evolution of scorpion venom arsenal

Journal of Proteomics, 2012
Venom is an important genetic development crucial to the survival of scorpions for over 400 million years. We studied the evolution of the scorpion venom arsenal by means of comparative transcriptome analysis of venom glands and phylogenetic analysis of shared types of venom peptides and proteins between buthids and euscorpiids.

Scorpion Venom Peptides: Chemistry, Structural Diversity, and Therapeutic Applications

Journal of Current Toxicology and Venomics
Abstract: Recent advancements in proteomics, genomics, and transcriptomics have underscored the significance of natural products in drug discovery, particularly animal-derived toxins. While only a limited number of biologically relevant toxins have been extracted from animals that produce these toxins, there remains significant potential to explore ...

Evidence for the Existence of Insect Defensin‐Like Peptide in Scorpion Venom

IUBMB Life, 2000
AbstractInsect defensin refers to a group of antibacterial peptides derived from a variety of insect species as well as from scorpion and possessing a three‐dimensional structure highly similar to that of scorpion toxins. A full‐length cDNA encoding an insect defensin‐like peptide was isolated from the venom gland cDNA library of the Chinese ...

Monoamine oxidase inhibitory activities of the scorpion Mesobuthus gibbosus (Buthidae) venom peptides

Toxicon, 2005
In the present study, crude venom of Mesobuthus gibbosus (Buthidae), a scorpion distributed all over Anatolia was isolated and purified by the Sephadex G-50 gel filtration and high pressure liquid chromatographic (HPLC) separation. Two of the five fractions (fractions 4 and 5) obtained from the Sephadex G-50 filtration and detected as lethal on mice ...

Expression, purification and functional characterization of a recombinant scorpion venom peptide BmTXKβ

Peptides, 2003
BmTXKbeta, a scorpion toxin isolated from the Chinese scorpion Buthus martensii Karsch (BmK), was expressed as a GST fusion protein in BL21 (DE3) strain. The recombinant GST-BmTXKbeta protein was purified by affinity chromatography. When treated with enterokinase, the GST-BmTXKbeta fusion protein released an approximate 6.5kDa protein which was the ...

Peptide T, a novel bradykinin potentiator isolated from Tityus Serrulatus scorpion venom

Toxicon, 1993
A bradykinin-potentiating peptide was isolated and characterized from venom of the scorpion Tityus serrulatus by chromatographic techniques followed by biological assays. The complete amino acid sequence (13 residues) of peptide is presented. The peptide potentiated the contractile activity of bradykinin on the isolated guinea-pig ileum, and inhibited ...
