Molecular Parentage Analysis Is Essential in Breeding Asian Seabass
In aquaculture species, maintaining pedigree information and genetic variation in each generation is essential, but very difficult. In this study, we used nine microsatellites to genotype 2,520 offspring from four independent full-factorial crosses (10 males × 10 females) of Asian seabass to reconstruct pedigree and monitor the change of genetic ...

Genes, fish and fisheries: translating science into policy
Abstract The 2024 Annual Symposium of the Fisheries Society of the British Isles reviewed the burgeoning impact of ‘omics’ technologies on fish ecology, management and forecasting. As with life sciences more generally, major advances in speed, cost‐effectiveness and breadth of applications in ‘omics’ has had profound societal and environmental impacts.

Molecular cloning, tissue distribution and daily expression of cry1 and cry2 clock genes in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) [PDF]
Biological rhythms are driven by circadian oscillators, which are ultimately controlled by the cyclic expression of clock genes. Cryptochromes (CRY), blue light photoreceptors, belong to the negative elements of the transcriptional feedback loop into the

Copepode parasites (Lernanthropus Kroyeri) were found in Suez Canal, Egypt from September 2017 to the end of August 2018. The copepode parasite infested the gills of commercially important fish hosts including, seabass (D. labrax) and spotted seabass (D. punctatus). The total prevalence was 64.25%.

Abstract Sex is an important driver of variation in behaviour, ecology and physiology. Sex identification in the Critically Endangered European eel (Anguilla anguilla) currently requires fish sacrifice, or the use of morphological differences such as body length, which can be inaccurate in certain habitats and at intermediate body lengths.

Abstract Broodstock management in aquaculture aims to optimise larval production to meet farm demand, which requires precise monitoring of the reproductive cycle. Traditional methods such as histology often require killing of fish, making them unsuitable for monitoring reproductive dynamics at fish level.

Population structure of seabass in Portugal: evidence from allozymes
Starch-gel electrophoresis was used to assess the level and distribution of genetic variation in juvenile European seabass sampled from five different nursery grounds along the coast of Portugal between November 1992 and February 1994.
