Second Language Acquisition

open access: yes, 2001
In the course of language acquisition, the learner passes through a series of ‘learner varieties,’ which approach successively the linguistic system of the learner's social environment. Children normally succeed in a perfect replication of this system.

Polarization‐resolved femtosecond Vis/IR spectroscopy tailored for resolving weak signals in biological samples using minimal sample volume

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Unique biological samples, such as site‐specific mutant proteins, are available only in limited quantities. Here, we present a polarization‐resolved transient infrared spectroscopy setup with referencing to improve signal‐to‐noise tailored towards tracing small signals. We provide an overview of characterizing the excitation conditions for polarization‐

The Maori language in New Zealand: a case study of language shift [PDF]

open access: yes, 1983
This thesis examines the language shift that has occurred among the Maori people of New Zealand. The displacement of the Maori language by English is described in terms of current theories of language loss involving factors such as bilingualism and ...

Enhancing Medical Students’ Communicative Skills in a 3D Virtual World

open access: yesEducational Technology & Society, 2019
This study explores the effects of how collaborating in a virtual world (VW) enhanced learners’ healthcare professional-patient communicative skills, including physician-patient and inter-professional communication in medical discourse.

Nuclear pore links Fob1‐dependent rDNA damage relocation to lifespan control

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Damaged rDNA accumulates at a specific perinuclear interface that couples nucleolar escape with nuclear envelope association. Nuclear pores at this site help inhibit Fob1‐induced rDNA instability. This spatial organization of damage handling supports a functional link between nuclear architecture, rDNA stability, and replicative lifespan in yeast.

Functional Discourse Units for Second Language Research

open access: yes, 1988
DISCOURSE ANALYSIS has been an accepted part of the methodology of second language (SL) research for some time (see, e.g., Chaudron, 1988, pp. 40-45; Hatch, 1978; Hatch & Long, 1980; Larsen-Freeman, 1980), and its procedures are becoming increasingly ...

Maturation Constraints on Language Development [PDF]

open access: yes, 1988
Despite several decades of research and writing on the topic, serious differences of opinion persist as to the scope and source of maturational constraints on language development.

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

Contrasting approaches to classroom research: Qualitative and quantitative analysis of languauge use and learning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Traditional concerns with foreign and second language education have been with instructional methodology, curriculum based on needs assessment, and occasionally well-grounded linguistic studies of acquisition.

Development of human monoclonal antibodies against TARM1 by yeast display

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Human monoclonal antibodies against TARM1 are generated by yeast display‐guided selection. These antibodies bind to soluble and cell‐surface forms of TARM1. Also, these antibodies exhibit agonistic activity in the NFAT‐GFP reporter assay, indicating that TARM1 signaling can be functionally modulated by antibodies and suggesting TARM1 as a potential ...
