The selectins and their ligands

Current Opinion in Cell Biology, 1994
The selectins are a family of carbohydrate-binding proteins, or lectins, that have stimulated tremendous interest because of their involvement in a wide array of interactions between leukocytes and endothelial cells. Highlights of recent progress include an extension of the list of instances of selectin participation in inflammatory diseases, further ...

Selectins

Current Opinion in Immunology, 1994
The selectins are three related receptors that initiate rolling of leukocytes on activated platelets or endothelium through Ca(2+)-dependent recognition of cell surface carbohydrates. Cell adhesion may be enhanced by a limited number of membrane glycoproteins that present high affinity carbohydrate ligands to specific selectins.

The selectin–selectin ligand axis in tumor progression

Cancer and Metastasis Reviews, 2008
This review will document that the selectin-selectin ligand axis is actively involved in tumor progression and drives this process. The involvement of selectins and their ligands in tumor progression takes place at three levels which will be reviewed: Interaction of tumor cells with platelets and leukocytes resulting in the formation of circulating ...

E‐selectin and L‐selectin polymorphisms in patients with periodontitis

Journal of Periodontal Research, 2009
Background amd Objective:  Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease in which environmental and genetic determinant factors contribute to individual subject’s susceptibility. A DNA polymorphism in the regulating region of adhesion molecule genes is suggested to modulate the molecule’s physiological effects.

Functions of Selectins

2001
The selectins are cell surface lectins that have evolved to mediate the adhesion of white blood cells to endothelial cells and platelets under flow. They recognize fucosylated, sialylated and in some cases sulfated ligands expressed on scaffold glycoproteins serving as functional counter-receptors.

Serum L-selectin and P-selectin levels in lymphomas

Haematologia, 2000
The migration of normal and malignant lymphoid cells is governed by specific adhesion molecules. Selectins comprise a family of adhesion receptors expressed by leukocytes, platelets and endothelial cells. In this study, the serum levels of soluble L-selectin and P-selectin were measured in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease and ...

The Selectins and Their Ligands

1993
Among the four major groups of cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) the selectins represent the smallest and most recently identified gene family (Lasky 1992; Vestweber 1992). In contrast to the three large families of the integrins, the immunoglobulin super gene family and the cadherins, the selectins consist of only three members: L-, E-, and P-selectin ...
