Impact of interventions to reduce nosocomial transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in English NHS Trusts: a computational modelling study

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases
Background Prior to September 2021, 55,000–90,000 hospital inpatients in England were identified as having a potentially nosocomial SARS-CoV-2 infection. This includes cases that were likely missed due to pauci- or asymptomatic infection.

Intelligent Orthopedics: Machine Learning in Diagnosis of Bone Disease, Implants, and Bone Health Monitoring

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Efficient recovery from traumatic or degenerative diseases is a great challenge, even after all the advancements in bone and cartilage regeneration. Machine learning (ML) algorithms have presented opportunities to enhance these aspects by accurately analyzing imaging data.

Exome sequencing reveals primary immunodeficiencies in children with community-acquired pseudomonas aeruginosa sepsis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
One out of three pediatric sepsis deaths in high income countries occur in previously healthy children. Primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) have been postulated to underlie fulminant sepsis, but this concept remains to be confirmed in clinical practice ...

Bacteria‐Responsive Nanostructured Drug Delivery Systems for Targeted Antimicrobial Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Bacteria‐responsive nanocarriers are designed to release antimicrobials only in the presence of infection‐specific cues. This selective activation ensures drug release precisely at the site of infection, avoiding premature or indiscriminate release, and enhancing efficacy.

A Geometrically Transient Platform for Bioelectronic Implants

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Minimally invasive bioelectronic implants often compromise performance for smaller sizes. To resolve this optimization dilemma, a wireless bioelectronic implant with a transient geometry is introduced (MiFi). The origami‐inspired device miniaturizes up to sixfold for syringe insertion and autonomously unfolds post‐implantation.

Pharmacological treatment options in sepsis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Sepsis is a common life-threatening condition characterised by organ dysfunction caused by dysregulated host immune response to infection. For patients with sepsis and septic shock therapeutic priorities include securing the airway, correcting hypoxia ...

Negotiating in a Foreign Land: Understanding the Curious Interactions Between Intracellular Mitochondria and Internalized Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Therapeutic nano‐drug delivery systems interact with cellular mitochondria in a multitude of ways. While the complexity of such interactions disrupts the mitochondrial electron transport chain and increases reactive oxygen species production, thereby contributing to nanoparticle toxicity, they also present unique theranostic opportunities in diseases ...
