An overview of the mechanisms and potential roles of extracellular vesicles in septic shock

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology
Septic shock, a subset of sepsis, is a fatal condition associated with high morbidity and mortality. However, the pathophysiology of septic shock is not fully understood. Moreover, the diagnostic markers employed for identifying septic shock lack optimal

The interaction of vasopressin and corticosteroids in septic shock: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

open access: yes, 2014
OBJECTIVES: Vasopressin and corticosteroids are both commonly used adjunctive therapies in septic shock. Retrospective analyses have suggested that there may be an interaction between these drugs, with higher circulating vasopressin levels and improved ...

Septic shock

open access: yesJournal of British Surgery, 1975
Abstract The problems associated with septic shock are highlighted, including those which arose during a 3-year prospective study. Mortality in the first year of the study was 71 per cent, falling to 38 per cent in the third year. The reasons, for this fall are detailed. The pattern of survival times changed over the 3 years, giving rise

Bioinformatic analysis identifies potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets of septic-shock-associated acute kidney injury

open access: yesHereditas, 2021
Background Sepsis and septic shock are life-threatening diseases with high mortality rate in intensive care unit (ICU). Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication of sepsis, and its occurrence is a poor prognostic sign to septic patients.

Consensus on circulatory shock and hemodynamic monitoring. Task force of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
OBJECTIVE: Circulatory shock is a life-threatening syndrome resulting in multiorgan failure and a high mortality rate. The aim of this consensus is to provide support to the bedside clinician regarding the diagnosis, management and monitoring of shock.

Quantitative proteomic analysis reveals different characteristics of bladder cancer cells after exposure to bisphenol A

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bisphenol A (BPA), a common chemical in plastics, exerts dual effects on bladder cancer cells: low doses promote growth and migration, while high doses suppress growth and migration. Multi‐omics and bioinformatics reveal BPA acts via MAPK and inflammatory pathways.

Characteristics of Sepsis-2 septic shock patients failing to satisfy the Sepsis-3 septic shock definition: an analysis of real-time collected data

open access: yesAnnals of Intensive Care, 2021
Background Baseline characteristics and disease severity of patients with septic shock according to the new Sepsis-3 definition may differ from patients that only comply with the Sepsis-2 definition.

Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock: Timing of Septic Shock Onset Matters

open access: yes, 2017
Introduction: Timing of septic shock onset may play a prognostic role in severe sepsis; however, clinical evidence provides contradictory results. This study aimed to investigate possible associations between timing of onset of septic shock and patient ...

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.
