Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Toward more sustainable food supply chains: insights from short food supply chains in Jordan

open access: yesFrontiers in Sustainability
IntroductionShort Food Supply Chains (SFSCs) are promoted as a pathway to more sustainable agri-food systems. Jordan’s fresh-produce sector, which relies heavily on local markets, offers a valuable setting to examine how SFSCs support sustainability ...

Short Food Supply Chains (SFSC) as Local and Sustainable Systems

open access: yesSustainability, 2020
We distinguish different types of Short Food Supply Chains (SFSC); nevertheless, their common main characteristic relate to reduced numbers of intermediaries between farmers/food producers and consumers.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Effects on logistic operations from RFID- and EPCIS-enabled traceability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Purpose – The paper aims to explore the potential effects on logistic operations of implementing the Electronic Product Code Information Service (EPCIS) standard and radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to enable food traceability.

SHORT FOOD SUPPLY CHAINS: KEY CONCEPTS, BENEFITS, RISKS, EUROPEAN UNION SUPPORT, MODELS FROM ROMANIA, STRATEGIES OF DEVELOPMENT [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Papers Series : Management, Economic Engineering in Agriculture and Rural Development
Short food supply chains represent an alternative channel to the classic food distribution system. Creating viable food supply chains is a challenge facing society today.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Circular Economy, Industrial Ecology and Short Supply Chain

open access: yes, 2016
In contrast to the linear “take-make-dispose” model of resource consumption, a new industrial model is proposed in the form of a circular economy. This model aims to optimize the use of resources and to reduce or eliminate waste, and is based on re-use, repair, ecodesign, industrial ecology, sustainable supply and responsible consumption.Industrial ...
